A friend of mine wrote descriptions of his friends when he was working on a novel. A character based off my friend Edgar, would have to be calm, patient, attentive to details, and dedicated to the persuit of excellence and perfectionism. He would also be kind, encouraging to others, and have a strong affinity toward meeting new people and trying new things. He would value order, justice, respect, security, loyalty, and independence. He would spend most of his time with friends and family.

"The 1st Megaman X game rewarded you with the ability to toss Hadokens that destroyed anything (except Sigma's final form) once you've collected all the upgrades. You even get to see Dr. Light in a gi as he presents you new weapon. The sequal would later give you a Shoryuken, but afterwards it's some lame gold armor.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced and FFTA2 are two other games that I would dedicate my time to, but I just got Dragon Quest IX for Christmas. Oh well :)"

"Yep, growing up makes gaming tough. It's even getting harder to put in a day out of the week for a D&D session with the guys, now that we're in our 30s and 40s. If it's not family matters, it's overtime at the office, or catching up on chores. I did a months worth of laundry yesterday, and painting the house today.

One of the first times I had a time constraint with a game was with Xenogears for PS1. I didn't have a Playstation myself (why didn't I buy one???), so I would play at a friends place on Saturdays nights (after D&D in the afternoon) while he watches anime. From 11pm until 3am once a week, that's all the time I had to enjoy an finsh Square's epic (took 74 hrs). 

Sure, it took months on end to finish a game, but I did enjoy that part of my gaming life. Aside from Xenogears, there was Final Fantasy: Tactics, Front Mission 3 that I also finished. Never did get around to completing FF7, got addicted to drawing spells in FF8 and quit, and he loaned out FF9 and never got it back.

Today, I stick to PC games, and I'm enjoying the time I'm putting in Mount & Blade: Warband. I just have a hour or two a few days a week for it, and at my age, I'm ok with that.

When I start dating again, I'm going miss gaming."

On Dennis Scimeca's  Game Writers Don't Need to Educate Dilettantes
"I know what the writer means. My group of friends have a large assortment of interests, that at times, a whole hour of conversation can go by with one person being completely left out. You don't know how many times I just sat, bored out of my mind when they start talking about the sci-fi epic, Babylon 5 or Star Trek. Then there are times when we're talking about KOTOR, and one of my friends tunes us out for an hour. I almost when home one day when they were talking about the Nazi 3rd Reich, which meant that the also went on about the 1st and 2nd as well.

It's not so much that you can't communicate about gaming to non-gamers, but it's difficult to talk about any in-depth topic with an audience that hasn't experienced it. Other examples are describing runners high to couch potatoes or why people love "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" to someone who is straight-edge.&nbs"

"Personally, I thought most of the gaming community would have learned not to buy games they haven't read a review for when Enter The Matrix was released. The best selling, worst reviewed game of all time. For those who don't remember, it was released on the same day that The Matrix: Reloaded was released in theatres, sold millions on PS2, X-Box, and GC, and was a buggy, glitchy piece of @#$! whose only redeeming quality was a live action make-out scene with Niobe (Jade Pinkett Smith) and Persephonie (Monica Bellucci), and that's pretty dull compared with what's on tv these days."

"I remember an episode of Game Night on 1UP.com where they were playing Battlefield Heroes that one of the editors said that the people who are good at FPS games tend to be jerks. Since you goal in such games is to hurt other players, and to hurt them more than the other team hurts your's, then trash talking is a natural extention of that. I believe that it's not so much that girls can't play these games (like Halo), but nice girls who would object to raping a dead player (corpse humping) as part of a victory dance can't play.

 

For the most part, nice people shouldn't play with jerks, whether male or female. In my experience with BF Heros, you see corpse humping, the robot dance, a silly wave, and other emotes bought through the the game. The only post kill emote players complain about is when I salute my dead opponent. That's right, they are complaining about my gesture of good sportsmanship. I suposse they would feel better about being shot in the face is a gentle humping. Some how, THAT"S normal. "
