"rs of War tackles it quite well by giving the player a "look at" button when there is a point of interest.
I've not worked on a horror game yet, but I did have to make some framing decisions on Wheelman - often I used a "cutaway" to frame action with varying success.
Whilst the target audience thought these scenes were "awesome" and "cinematic" other players believed they were taken out of the action too often and found it disorienting.
