Best History Lesson of 2009: The Beatles: Rock Band

Activision laid down the opening riffs to the licensing rock-off, but Harmonix gave the encore. Rather than focusing on making a tribute, The Beatles: Rock Band offers a near complete history lesson of the band and the changing music scene of the time.

From the montage of tour photos in the cut-scenes to the small audio clips from studio recording sessions, The Beatles: Rock Band sets a new high mark for blending games with history. The extras, such as video footage of their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and the hilarious Christmas recording, offer insight few other games attempt. For a history lesson, I'll take The Beatles: Rock Band over Mario's Time Machine any day.

I never thought of this game as a history lesson before reading your piece, but now I see it. I've had this game for awhile and never touched it yet. My Dad is a big Beatles fan, and he randomly picked up Beatles Rock Band one night after work. I didn't pay much attention to it initially, since I had other games I was playing. Then for a while I totally forgot we owned it. Now that you've put it in the light of "history lesson," I'm actually interested in seeing what it can teach me about the Beatles. In fact, I'm off to boot it up right now. Thanks for the jump-start!
