These are people who may merely dabble in gaming, enjoy games that may not demand the attention that deeper games do or more to the point merely don’t have the time to devote to gameplay other titles do. As time goes on though, there are casual gamers who play the informal titles they enjoy at the pace of hardcore gamers. Therefore, it becomes arguable that casual gamers are becoming the new hardcore class of the gaming community.

What it essentially boils down to is that casual gamers keep purchasing and playing the casual games made by independent developers or ‘side-projects’ of big name creators that enable to continue making the big name games that the ‘hardcore’ continue to know and love as the days go on. So, it could be arguably a symbiotic relationship between the casual and hardcore titles and gamers in the community. Thus, as long as people keep playing, the ability to maintain the industry as a whole via easier or difficult titles ensures that there will always be a steady stream of new games with content that players, regardless of how much time they put into their gaming lives, may have never seen before. Thus, casual titles serve as a means to an end in regards to hardcore or triple AAA games constantly creating circumstance where casual gamers have the potential to always become hardcore.

These labels only persist because people keep using them. It's about time that we wake up and realize that we're all gamers and anything that makes gaming more popular and advances the industry is a good thing.

No, Jay, I disagree completely. Hardcore Gamers and Casual Gamer absolutely should not be bunched together as simply "gamers". The hardcore gamer is about core games. We are about the challenge, the graphics, the multiplayer, the head shots, the strategy, the community, the advancements, and the AAA blow your face off games. Casual gamers are about ease of use, mini game collections, shovelware, cute avatars, and rainbows. If I ever see a cute rainbow in any of my core games I will choke a bitch, I swear it. Seriously, it is a horrible thing for the industry to think that we are the same. We are not. This is exactly what developers have been struggling with since the Wii released. They are trying to find a way to make their games appeal to both of us at the same time instead of separating us into groups. The result is core games that are too easy, with stripped down mechanics, and watered down gameplay. My Example would be Mass Effect 2. I do not know about you, but I do not want my hardcore games becoming any easier. I do not want all the tings I loved about them to be streamlined and simplified and watered down. This is where we are headed, and it needs to stop. I am not against casual gamers. I think it is great that gaming has made it to the mainstream. Just keep my hardcore games away from that bucket of water, Developers.

@Ed I personally think that so called 'hardcore' gamers are far too invested in the concept of challenge, to the detriment of the industry. I personally play games to have an experience. Often times that experience is helped by a little bit of tension in the gameplay but I am NOT playing games to be frustrated and play the same sequence over and over again until i get it right. All because the 'hardcore' is trying to define what games are as an exclusionary and arbitrary difficulty that makes them pine for the old days of 3 lives and 3 continues. Let me just put it in plain words for you. The old way of difficulty for the sake of difficulty is dieing. You want to know why? It's only fun to you. For the average gamer when a game becomes too difficult they stop. Games have had to tone down the difficulty of their 'normal' modes because hard games don't sell to a wide audience. So please, please, PLEASE stop acting like difficulty and complexity are the only purpose for a game to exist. It ruins countless games that I really wanted to play. If you want a challenge then turn up the difficulty level on your game. That's what it's fucking there for. Don't ruin other people's experiences because you don't think that people who can't beat ninja gaiden aren't worthy of gaming. The line between casual and hardcore is a hell of a lot more blurry then so called 'hardcore' gamers seem to want to admit. I personally don't consider someone a hardcore gamer unless they can understand and appreciate a complex and deep storyline. That doesn't make me right it just proves how nebulous and how much of a non issue the casual and hardcore labels are to me.
