Dreamcastiversary

EGM asked on its cover if 9.9.99 was "The Biggest 24 Hours in Entertainment History?" It was one of the most significant, most memorable system launches in a lot of gamers' lives. The sense of renewed enthusiasm was palpable -- Sega was back, baby...in a huge, huge way.

Yet, despite all that energy and excitement, the system didn't stick. The Dreamcast flashed brightly and flickered away just as quickly, lasting about as long as a VMU battery.

The console is dead, but judging by the number of articles Bitmob users have put together for the 10th anniversary of its launch, very few gamers have forgotten it. We'll join the community with a few posts of our own, starting with a very revealing podcast with one of the former members of the Dreamcast team.

Check below for links to all our Dreamcastiversary coverage. We'll be updating this post with more all week long:

I was 6 years old when the Dreamcast launched,so I don't really have any memories of it,but I love reading everyone else's.I now realise that the console I had previously written off was indeed a fantastic piece of hardware.Reading all these articles has given me a new found respect for the Dreamcast.Keep up the good work:)

Ironically and in no way a relation the anniversary, my roommate happened to pick up a second hand Dreamcast in excellent condition for $30 dollars a few days ago. Now we just have to figure out what games to get for it.

After all these memories of Dreamcast that have surfaced over the past couple weeks, it has me wishing I had never sold mine years ago. Queue the Price is Right failure jingle.:( All these articles about Dreamcast have brought many good times back to mind. The feeling of wonder when I opened a box under the tree for Christmas, and there was my DC. I don't know about anyone else, but console launches nowadays just don't feel as intense as it was when DC launched.

Speaking of the 9/9/99 EGM and Dreamcast related magazines in general... A few months ago, I went through all my old gaming magazines and threw a ton of them into the recycling bin just to clear out some shelf space. What's funny is that the vast majority of gaming mags that I kept were all Dreamcast related simply because I'm such a fan of the system. I just dug them out tonight and sure enough... the EGM launch issue is there, right alongside the much less impressive but still cool Game Informer launch issue. What WAS impressive about the Game Informer issue is that it had an old FuncoLand price sheet stuffed in it. Talk about nostalgia. I took a photo of a few of the DC related magazines I have handy. If there is interest, I could possibly post some scans somewhere. Now that I think about it, I probably could have written an essay about my love of old Dreamcast related magazines. Anyways, here's the photo: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v48/allreet/DreamcastMags.jpg

Memorable because since the Dreamcast released only Mainstream crappy systems have been successful. PS2 and Wii have had turdy launches and both have been super successful. Dreamcast had the best launch and had an early demise.
