Few games blew my mind more than Super Mario 64. I would still call that 3D platformer the best launch title ever. Of course, we all expected a sequel...which we never got. Well...not until Super Mario Sunshine came out for the GameCube, but it still seems criminal that a Super Mario 64 2 was never released.

We now have the next best thing to a true follow-up. Fans have modded the hell out of Super Mario 64 in order to give us Super Mario Star Road, a full-blown game with over 30 levels and 120 stars to collect. Check out the release trailer below to see some of the cool things these guys have done with their fan title. If you like what you see, then you can download the game at their YouTube page.

Some pretty impressive stuff there and it always blows me away what the mod community can come up with. Loved the blending of 2D and 3D elements as well using stuff from Super Mario World series on the SNES. May have to download this and check it out soon.

Super Mario 64 is, and always will be, the greatest game of all time in my opinion. Followed very, very, very closely by the original Mass Effect and A Link to the Past. I loved Super Mario 64 so much that I have played it every single year since the year it released. I never got every 120 stars though. Well, not until this past month when I played it again for the 15th time.

I did that purposely though. I never wanted to get every star, because then I would have beaten the entire game, and would have less of a reason to go back. Late last year, I decided to finally do it and I got every star. I had played the game so much that it only took me 5 or so hours, but it will remain one of the best gaming moments in my 25 years of gaming.

I always get a little angry when people say that Super Mario 64 doesn't hold up. I usually ask them when the last time they played it was, and they usually tell me that haven't played it since it came out. Then I yell at them for being a follower who lacks a mind of their own and who can't forge their own path in life and instead must rely on what everyone else thinks in order to get by in their trivial excuse of a life with a minimal amount of dignity.

When they finish crying, I kindly ask them to at least play it again. At least then they will see that not only does it hold up, it plays better than most action platformers that have come out since SM64 did. It still controls wonderfully, looks great, and the level design is still unmatched. The game is just as fun to play today as it was in 1996.

I can tell by this video that they don't have the same...quality of level design that Super Mario 64 had, but it looks enjoyable nonetheless. I am looking forward to giving it a go.
