Darksiders: Why You Should Go Buy It

This isn't going to be a traditional review of Darksiders, plenty of other people have done that already and they all pretty much agree, it's a really good game. I just finished it today and I can say it's very well made, and I've enjoyed the crap out of it. Yes, it borrows from every other game you can imagine, but so what? Star Wars was practically a Chinese menu of other movies (a little Kurosawa from Column A, a little Flash Gordon from Column B), and we all know that worked out pretty well, didn't it?

I needed a fire breathing horse to carry all my videogame baggage.

The real reason you should plunk your dinero down to purchase Darksiders is because it's a real game from a new developer, and God knows we need to support them.

Think about it for a second. We've all read the stories about the amount of layoffs across the videogame industry in 2009. One thing I can guarantee you is that these layoffs will not staunch the flow of Carnival Games, iPhone games, and licensed garbage being shoveled onto the Wii. What is far less likely is that the next Dead Space will get the eight figure budget it needs to get off the ground. That's where companies like Vigil Games become so important. Joe Madureria formed Vigil because he has a passion for games, and because he had made a name for himself in the comic book field, Vigil was able to secure enough financing from THQ to turn out what most of us would recognize as an actual video game.

I don't want to go all Chicken Little on everyone and say the sky is falling, but it's not out of the realm of possibility to expect that with the rise of Natal, whatever Sony is calling their waggle wand, and the continued Wii steamroller, the type of game that most of us know and love could become a very small piece of the overall gaming pie.

Don't think this is possible?

Really?

Remember when Flight Sims were all the rage?

Yeah. Me either.

Good points, Jeff. I always make sure to buy a game new in retail if it appears to be a more niche title and/or from a less prominent developer. Please, don't ever buy the $55 used copy of a game; support the developer. With that said, all the talk and reviews surrounding Darksiders has me very interested in it. I knew absolutely nothing about the game before it released, and now I view it as a must-play title. I'm hoping to fit it in before BioShock 2 releases.

I had the whole used/new debate in my mind as I was writing this, but that's an entirely different rant. However, you make a great point. Not only should you go buy Darksiders, but buy it new. And I don't understand folks that buy the $55 used copy either. Spring for the extra five bucks so the developers can cash in on their labor. They deserve it.

While I appreciate the nobility of this cause, I don't feel that it's a good enough reason to pay $60 for a new game. I'm all for smaller games at a smaller price and don't care as much as I used to for "epic" games. Sure, I'll buy 3-5 major releases at full price every year but I leave those purchases for the God of Wars and BioWare games of the world. Vigil has a long road ahead of them in this market.

Chris, you're entirely in the right to spend your money the way you see fit. I'll say two things though: A: You're missing out on a really fun game. B: I'm not totally with you on "smaller games at smaller price" thing yet. The five dollar games feel like little time wasters to me, and I haven't yet found that twenty dollar game that really justifies its price tag yet.

@Jeff - Yeah, I hate it when I walk up to the register to buy the new copy and the cashier tells me there's a used copy for $5 cheaper. I've even been questioned why I was choosing to pay $5 more, in which I responded I support the developer, not the store. It was an awkward transaction after that, ha ha.
