Discussion Topic: Sharing Stuff

Once again my title is miss leading, but then again how is sharing miss leading.  So with that being said lets get on todays topic as we go over different games.  One game just came out and needless to say I wish it had what we were going to talk about in it.

Last night I popped in Borderlands and started directly into multiplayer.  It got me thinking when I was playing with 1 stranger and two of my friends after collecting a green type of shotgun.  What I wanted to do is send him the gun as a gift in game.  Well needless to say I could not find a way to do it other then drop it on the ground.  After I dropped the gun from inventory he was able to pick it up.

With games like Viva Pinata which in the game has a transfer system between players on your friends list.  I think this would be a great tool for any game like this since it is a bunch of random guns.  Not knowing when you will get a Legendary gun this can be a way to help out your friends if you don't need or want the gun.  Because if you send it to them via a mail system in-game then that stops from trying to plan a meet up.

Now I have not played Forza 2 much, but I hear that has an auction house like World of Warcraft does.  Need less to say this may be another way to share, but then again I am not sure this would be the best way to go.  As many people would just try to grind many hours/days to get the best guns and sell them for stupid amounts of money.

What do you think about sharing items in games like RPG's or RPS type of games?  Is it something that more developers should think about or am I just over thinking this topic just because of my wants?

The obvious issue will always be balancing, ensuring that players don't get items that make them more powerful than the game intends. I like the idea as it fosters a good simple community aspect to the game. Maybe in the case of role playing games you impose level restrictions on the use of items so that players access items appropriate to their level and challenges they will meet. Another idea would be to impose a level restriction on access to the store. This might open up a new item based meta game for players who max out on level based challenges.

@Gerald Borderlands does put a restriction on the guns at what level you can use them. How ever if I had a gun that someone else could use down the road I would like to send them it. This way when they get to that level They can enjoy it as well.

I am not commenting on this until a "Y'ALL" is inserted somewhere in the text. And on a completely different subject, how is the shooting mechanics Toby?

@Toby - Like I said, I will likely rent it this weekend, but Fallout 3 is sucking up most of my time. Are we still down for some CivRev sometime? And just so I know: Y'all is when you are addressing many people and Yull is when you are addressing just one? :D
