E3's Best Co-op Games (Plus Two We Wish Were Co-Op)

A while ago, while shopping around Best Buy for a new computer monitor, a brilliant idea popped into my head. Between my girlfriend and me, we have two Xbox 360s in the apartment -- why not make the second monitor a second TV, so we could play full-screen co-op games over Xbox Live?

A little shopping around and a few cable purchases later, we were all hooked up. Gears of War 2, Saints Row 2, Resident Evil 5, Mercenaries 2, even Fable 2 (whose co-op was an insult)...we did them all. In order to afford two copies of all these games, I had to steal food from Demian's cupboard whenever I visited his pad, but the only thing more fun than playing online games is playing them in the same room with your partner.

So while walking around E3, we both couldn't help but have our eyes peeled (and wallets warmed up) for more games we'd be playing together in the upcoming months. In the latest Cut Scene, we each pick out our top three co-op games of the show, plus one game that we wish was co-op but unfortunately, isn't.

And if you're still in the mood for more E3 chit-chat after that, I wrap up the expo with the guys from The Fan590 out of Toronto on their Got Game podcast. It's super short, like 12 minutes, so give it a listen!

I haven't played much of the Uncharted 2 beta, but what I have played left me disappointed. I'll give it another shot in a minute.

Fairy Tale fights I will be looking forward to this on PS3. Also I would be more worried Shoe if your shirt was pink and she made you wear it. 8) I know Crackdown 2 would be on my list for co-op. Nice cut-scene though.

Poor Shoe, but it could have been worse. At least it wasn't a Kirby shirt.

So is starfy any good? It just makes me wonder now with Brian's comment and Shoe wearing that Michigan colored shirt.

You two are so friggin' cute. I don't know why but that Borderland's art design keeps impressing the shit out of me.

Come on Shoe--you've gotta stick up for Halo, man. Gears of War? Never heard of it.

Borderlands looks interesting. The earlier screens I saw of it looked more or less like all the other post-apocalyptic fare of late. I think, in contrast to Fallout 3, more people will take to the less-bleak destruction of civilization for the long haul. That is, assuming the game's fun.

Why not just buy a second tv, and use it as a monitor if you are going to be gaming on it? Seems like that makes a lot more sense.

I cant believe that Raychul compared Gears to Halo and called Halo a fail. They are completely different styles of games, for one thing the co-op campaign experience was better on Halo as you would play with up to 3 of your mates an oversight that was not added to Gears 2. Horde on Gears was ok but dulled the experience of the game in general, making it a repetitive experience (one you didn't want to repeat after hitting level 50). As for Gears being a better game I think that's a wrong assumption, for one thing the multiplayer works on Halo, the same cannot be said for Gears. Gears 2 has more bugs and glitches in it than you should get in a big named title. I would say that it all bottles down to choice. Halo and Gears are both excellent games but the multiplayer experience on Halo is far superior than that of Gears who quite clearly went in a direction that made it not live up to the reputation of the first game. Its fair to say that Borderlands is definitely a good pick for a co-op game and if the game lives up to the hype that its building then its going to be a brilliant experience. Raychul Picked a good choice with Left 4 Dead 2 and if Valve continue to support L4D and release new content then they will please the fans of the first game possibly swaying them to gain an added pleasure from the second release. Hopefully this will make the 2 games two completely different experiences.

@Simon Weatherall I'm a skeptic on the what seems to be annual release of L4D because the gameplay differences just don't seem that game breaking or game changing. I feel ashamed that I was one of the dweebs that bought crackdown ontop of signing up for the beta to get the guaranteed coveted Halo 3 beta, and hell I didn't even touch crackdwon until the end of 2007 and I truly feel ashamed but now its my chance to redeem myself as I will definitely be playing Crackdown 2 day one hands down. I hope they keep those damn orbs because holy crap I loved collecting every single one, and many those rooftop races were so damn awesome especially in the MP mode.

You know, Shoe, Miss Moore's got a very good point with Gears being superior and Halo being fail. Just sayin'.

@David Zhuo I agree to some extent. L4D is going to have 4 new characters and new levels to which I believe the majority are in daytime. New enemies and new weapons including chainsaws and axes. I can understand why they are releasing it so soon, it does make some sense. I think people are complaining because its not going to be cheap or free. I don't think its going to bring massive changes but I do believe that it will be worth the price, if noting more L4D has replay value. @Bryan Harper How is Halo a fail?! for one thing it has 4 titles available, its sold more copies than Gears has for obvious reasons. If it was such a big 'fail' do you not think Microsoft would have dropped the title by now instead of releasing another 2 titles ;D If Gears was such a fantastic game why is it full of glitches and errors?! It could be a fair to say Gears 2 was rushed into publishing! I suppose if you like waiting up to 20 minutes to get in a multiplayer match then that game is for you. ;)
Why not just buy a second tv, and use it as a monitor if you are going to be gaming on it? Seems like that makes a lot more sense.
I use it much more as a computer monitor (for my Bitmob work, too), so it had to be a computer monitor first with nice resolution, TV monitor second.
