Examining the abundant sex appeal in the Resident Evil: Revelations demo

The recently released Resident Evil: Revelations demo for the Nintendo 3DS has an awful lot of sex appeal crammed into it. Considering the experience runs around 15 minutes, I was a bit shocked at how much of Jill Valentine’s figure I saw.

RE Revelations Jill 1

The demo begins with a close-up shot and pan over our heroine’s whole body -- dressed in some revealing, skin-tight body armor -- as she lays unconscious on a bed in a disheveled room. I already feel like some creepy voyeur, and I haven’t even started playing yet. Jill wakes up and radios her comrade, Parker, to tell him she’s unsure of where she is. Soon after, a blood-thirsty monster bursts out of the closet where it was lurking this whole time.

Just going off of the demo, we obviously lack the proper context of how this section fits into the larger game, but it does make me wonder what Jill had to endure before this point. If she wasn't armed and dangerous, I would think this was the intro to some kind of digital, creature-on-girl snuff porn.

As she runs -- under the player’s control -- she moves away from the “over the shoulder” framing just enough for us to see her entire behind, accentuated not just by her leggings but also by the 3D effect. How much attention did the developer put into making sure the curves of her body really popped with the 3D cranked up?

Speaking of which: Jill is a woman. She has breasts. OK, we get it. But does she really need to have them pushed up like that to show off so much cleavage in the cut scenes? The gal is stuck on an abandoned cruise ship with a couple of dudes and a bunch of monsters. Who does she need to impress? In fact, it’s cold, and she’s out in the middle of the ocean, so I would imagine she’d want to button up a bit more.

RE Revelations Jill (Note: This screen shot is not a good example of what I described in the text)

Jill’s revealing attire gives an eerie subtext to what the monsters’ true intentions might be as they lunge towards her. It also leaves the target-male-demographic player at the weird crossroads of gawking at this woman while helping her fight to survive. Obviously, this isn’t a new motif for the series (Ada Wong, Jill in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, and Sheva Alomar come to mind); I just felt it necessary to comment on how prevalent I found it this time around.

Jill’s always been a tough character. She can shoot, stab, and kick with the best of them. But this demo’s camera appears to be stuck on male-gaze mode.

Ever worn neoprene? It can get pretty hot. I would undo my zipper too, just to let some steam out. I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I haven't worn neoprene before. Does it allow for maximum mobility and feel like you're wearing nothing at all?

It's not uncommon for developers to contrive situations where it makes sense for unnecessary sexual content to exist.

"Of course she's dressed like that. This fight takes place in a strip club, after all."

Doesn't make it any less unnecessary. On top of which, watching the trailer, there is another person in swim gear; he's a man and isn't unzipped. So the developers didn't dress Jill down for any reason other than titilation.

Yeah. If one person is hot, all people must be hot. That is a perfectly logical assumption.

Whatever the reason, doesn't matter. Breasts aren't new and they're nothing to be concerned about. They're there. Calling attention to them is just making the problem worse.

If breasts are "nothing to be concerned about," then what "problem" does calling out the excessive, in-your-face depiction of them worsen?

Calling them out MAKES a problem out of something that ISN'T a problem.

Either way, I'm done here. Feel free to continue. Honestly I hadn't noticed her breasts in all the time I've been following the game and playing the demo, but that's just me. You can look at them and continue to be scandalized by them all you want. But I'm not arguing this with you anymore.

Nothing at all... nothing at all... nothing at all

I dunno. Did the camera in RE5 not go far back enough for us to fully appreciate Chris's sexy man-butt?

Hey Andres, your comments seem to be showing up OK....

I watched the demo, and none of what you described seemed very voyeuristic or exploitative. The cleavage wasn't near as blatant as your average action or fighting game, and there weren't any "Miranda Lawson shots" (totally just made that up). Are video games in general sexist? Most definitely. But I didn't see much to get upset about in this demo. Jill is dressed in what looks like some sort of wetsuit/neoprene special forces outfit...so what?

The focus of the demo was clearly on the action...not any sort of gratuitous sex appeal.

Just the beginning, where she's sleeping seems voyeuristic to me. I agree that her attire is far from the worst examples in games that we can find.

I just felt that what she was wearing combined with 1. the close-up shot and pan over her body at the beginning 2. the way her the camera frames her butt when she runs (which isn't depicted as blatantly in that screen shot but is obvious when you play the demo) and 3. to a lesser extent, but still, her cleavage, seemed a bit much to me.

I'm not saying that the game is bad or that it should be changed per se. It's just that under all the action in the demo, Capcom added quite a bit of sex appeal, however subtle it might seem at first glance.

Right, but it pans over her so quickly. I had to pause the video to catch any "naughty bits." And isn't the point of view (and by extension, how Jill's butt is framed) similar to most third-person action games? (including Resi 4 and 5) I'm not sure how to make that under-sexed without 1) Giving Jill a top that covers her butt or some sort of baggy pants, or 2) Changing the perspective.

Even in that screenshot it doesn't seem very exploitative--it's just a third-person shot of a woman wearing a neoprene outfit...I wouldn't even be looking at it if there weren't a screenshot. I'd imagine most players would be focused on the action and not on a rear-end that ocassionally comes into view (and not even the dominent feature in frame).

I'd agree with you if the cutscene's camera pointed at anything inappropriate (like the infamous butt shot from Mass Effect 2). But apart from the alleged voyeuristic nature of the quick pan up JIll's body, I didn't see anything even close to being considered sexist.

It's totally a quick pan, and it's not like it's scandalous, but it's definitely a male gaze that's looking over her body while she's unconscious.

I agree that RE4 and RE5 have simillar camera perspectives, but I don't quite remember the framing being from the butt up or at least not as blatantly so because of such tight pants/neoprene. I believe it was waist up in 4. I haven't gotten around to 5 yet.

The developer wouldn't need to change the perspective. If they wanted to get rid of the butt shots, they would just have to raise the camera a little. But who knows what the motivation behind the framing is? Could it be because of the small 3DS screen? Regardless, it's still prevalent, is what I'm saying (as also noted by Tuan in a seperate comment).

I agree that in most video games, the player usually focuses on the actions of their character and not so much on the aesthetics, so it seems like I'm going out of my way to comment on something that seems so secondary. But I'm not starting a campaign, I'm just highlighting the subtext I saw while playing the demo.

I think it's important to note that I never said the demo or game was "sexist." I'm just pointing out that it has these sexualized undertones, shots, and camera angles fit into such a relatively short experience.

Nothing is prevalent until you make it out to be. I did notice that her butt is clearly in view while running, and I thought that was nice to be honest. It's not like Jill's character changed at all, and she's not showing much skin either.

Having all of those lewd thoughts pointed out in your article should say more about you and not the developers to be honest.

Does it say more about me? I was talking to Layton, one of our editors, about this earlier. I was wondering how to grapple with being part of the target male audience and taking some pleasure in the aesthetics, as you related, while the feminist in me feels the need to call some of these depictions out.

And does that make me pervet for noticing these things? Or are simillar images just so prevalent in gaming and other media depictions of women -- to the point where this seems quite tame since she's not showing much skin -- to where we as viewers we're desensitized to them?

I agree with your last point about similar images being so prevalent with a certain depiction of women. With other games it is very very obvious, as if they were saying "hey, these chicks have great racks, look!"  With Revelations, it's much more subtle. Jill just happens to be showing a bit of cleavage (not even a lot) and her butt is perfectly in view while you're running. It really could be worse and she could be shaking her hips a bit more to make her butt even more noticeable. My point is that the sexual appeal isn't as in-your-face as with other games, so I just don't think it should warrant such attention.

I noticed she was sexy, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Sheva was introduced ass first in RE5 too if I remember correctly.  That game was sexist and racist, as well as rubbish *trolls furiously*
