This is my entry for the Bitmob First-Person Writer Challenge. It is from the point of view of a gaming teen who becomes addicted to Pokemon: HeartGold. This is a fictional story based on things that have happened to friends of mine. I haven't actually played Pokemon: HeartGold and don't plan on playing it or any other Pokemon game ever.
Part 1- Finding Gold
Nathan and I stood there in the cold and dark waiting. There was no sign of life inside the shop and not another person in sight. His watch claimed midnight and he asked me, “You did check to see if there would be a midnight release here, right?”
“Um...” I said, “I just kinda assumed that there would be one.”
We decided to sleep outside Game Crazy in the car that night. I didn't want to go home empty handed and Nathan is the type of guy who will do what you want as long as you promise him it will be fun. All I had to do was tell him that waiting with me at the, apparently non-existent, midnight release for Pokemon: Heart Gold would be fun.
I pulled out my fat DS in the car and started my old copy of Gold in preparation. Hours passed and before I knew it the first employee opened up shop. I was in the store for maybe five minutes before my golden Pokemon treasure was in hand. I was home in the next twenty minutes. Nathan told me to never ask him for a ride again and he peeled out of the driveway, leaving me to enjoy my prize.
Part 2- Never Stood a Chance
After tearing through the packaging I looked wide eyed at the strange pokeball device but quickly disregarded it for the game itself. My hand shook as I moved the cartridge closer and closer to my DS. When it clicked in my heart skipped a beat. Next, my finger descended on the power button and the lights cast from the device were shining rays of heaven to my eyes. Moments later Pokemon music beckoned to my 8 year old self.
My eyes must have gleamed with excitement as a shaky and wide smile spread across my face. I felt the warm and loving golden fist of Pokemon closing around my heart and calling to me. I was ready to take my first hit off the familiar drug of Pokemon.
