From pixels to polygons: Blocky game characters get rounder

Hollywood movie stars get cosmetic surgery to look younger, so why can't video-game characters shed their pixels for dazzling, 3D makeovers? You would get some work done as well if you looked like a pile of Lego puke....

I never really thought about it until I saw all these side by side. Modern graphics engines really do a lot to portray characters, look at the personality and edge each present-day counterpart has. It's easy to see how this could enhance storytelling.

Well... all accept Donatello. He looks equally expressionless to his 8-bit self.

Artists sometimes get creative to give old game characters a fresh look, but there are key elements that should remain unchanged, like Rick's mask, or Duke's flattop.

Donatello might be a zombie.

Look at Kid Icarus up there in the upcomming 3DS game. Notice his square hands? I will NOT buy a game that has characters with square hands. I won't do it. This is 2011, not 1994. In the PS1/N64 days, square hands were expected. This is not the PS1 days, we are far beyond that. I don't care how many polygons you have to work with, if you can not take the time to render individual fingers, I will not take the time to buy your game. Simple as that.

It is distracting and cheap. It smells of a rushed experience that cut corners.

I'm not a fan of brick hands either, but as long as the gameplay is good I'd let it slide. Katamari Damacy's visuals could not be blockier, but that game is addictive and a lot of fun.

He needs paper thin hands, like Parappa the Rapper. Then he could do a super-phat rhyme about...angels and demons? Mwaha?

That question mark at the end of your laugh seals the deal!

I looked for a menacing pose for Hugo, but there isn't any.
