If you’ve ever dreamnt of a weekend partying with beautiful women (or men), drinking and dancing in Singapore, then spending 48 hours developing a video game at the International Game Developers Association 2010 Global Game Jam will not appeal to you. However, if you prefer the later, then grab your bags and get the airport ASAP because from 5 o’clock January 29 until 5 o’clock January 31, hundreds of game developers from around the world are bum rushing Singapore’s GAMBIT, a collaborative research centre between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the government of Singapore.

After your 14 hour plane flight (if you’re flying from Los Angeles), organizers are giving you just 48 hours to design the next “ground breaking game”. Considering that most ground breaking games (I’m looking at you Final Fantasy 13!) take developers years working in the same time zone to develop, I’m not sure how revolutionary a game will be with just two days of development time, but maybe that’s not really the point of the event.

"Community and creativity are what it's all about," said William Uricchio, Director of MIT's Comparative Media Studies program and Lead Principal Investigator at GAMBIT. "With the Global Game Jam, GAMBIT continues its efforts to promote fresh thinking about games — and to draw on global talents to do so.”

The best part about this event, for those of us unfortunates who can’t afford the jet-setting-game developer's lifestyle, is that we will still get the try the games they create. On January 31, they are going to be uploaded the games to http://www.globalgamejam.org.

All those who attend the event won't find out what theme they'll have to use until they arrive, but how about this for a theme, your game can only use one button. So I ask you, what is the best game idea you have that sticks to this theme? My idea would be an endurance game of single button pressing madness to see how long one could maintain the forearm mangling effects of continuously executing E. Honda's infamous hundred hand slap. Bring the button mashing, bring the pain!
