Part 2: Spec Ops

The second pillar of the Modern Warfare 2 package is the co op mode known as Spec Ops. This mode has 23 different missions, varying difficulty levels, and the ability to play split screen or online (or on your own-but that defeats the purpose of a co op mode) with a friend. Every beaten level garners you one star, and beating the mission on Veteran difficulty setting will get you up the total three. After beating every mission on veteran the final total is 69 stars. Why not 70? You decide for yourself.
The problem with Spec Ops mode is that it begins to become repetitive. Fast. A couple levels in, and you begin to wonder if this mode was simply a throw away section filled with left over missions from the singleplayer. While. yes, there are several fun moments in this mode, there is also way to many reused scenarios. Recycled objectives, recycled set pieces, recycled everything. Many of the missions actually are ripped straight from the campaign, and even from Cod 4.
Of all the things in MW2, Spec Ops feels the most shallow and unneeded. It is essentially a challenge based singleplayer, with a friend. And, like a mentioned in my singleplayer experience overview, i enjoyed the fact that the campaign was short. far too easily. A game like MW2 easily can become repetitive and monotonous.
Good luck also if you are trying to play online and you get a little lag. That can completely disrupt a mission, making a potential aced level into a instant restart.
The best way I can think to experience Spec Ops is:
A. You need a good friend to play with
B. To play in short bursts.
This mode is too repetitive for prolonged playing, and too shallow for any real depth.
So, what is there to praise? Well, this mode IS fun, in short bursts. I think the sheer fact that there is a co op mode at all is a great step forward for Infinity Ward.
What about the Negatives? It is can be tedious, repetitive, easily infuriating, lag filled sometimes, and is recycled at points.
Should we praise Infinity Ward for Spec Ops?
No. Spec Ops is a nice idea, a great step forward, but ultimately its a co op campaign that falls flat at many points.
Oh, and yes I know this came out later than I said in the last post. Forgot it was Labor Day.
(Hope all of you had a great Labor Day)
The next section will be the grand finale of this series. The Multiplayer.
Oh boy.
I will splitting that section into Part 3 and Part 4, there's just WAY to much to cover in one post.
Thanks for sticking with me till the end here! Disagree with me? Agree wholeheartedly? I would love to see what the community thinks in the comments.
See y'all next Monday.
