When developers start selling game endings as DLC, then we can all agree it's getting out of hand, but until then....

News Blips:

Assassin's Creed 2

Apparently the Assassin's Creed 2 DLC was originally part of the main game. Ubisoft Montreal's Patrice Desilets commented that the decision was made to "take a portion of the game that was planned and [...] give it in DLC," in order to "remove some stress to the team while giving more to fans and people who like Assassin's Creed." Before you get your grudge on, consider that back in the day this extra content might not have ever been released or would have been saved for the sequel. [Kotaku]

From now until January 7, 2010, all PSN and PSP Sega games will be 40% off. This includes extra content recently released for Sonic and Valkyria Chronicles. If you can figure out a way to gift downloadable content, a couple of these titles might make nice last-minute stocking stuffers. [Sega Blogs]

Microsoft will be launching the Music Marketplace today, a one-stop shop for all your music game needs. Yanking the various Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and Lips downloadable content out of the general Marketplace should clean up the joint. It's about time. [1UP]

A Boston-area mother called the police last Saturday over her son's alleged gaming habit. The call took place around 2:30 am; it seems the young man wouldn't listen to his mom's wishes to turn the console off and go to bed. The authorities diffused the situation, but come on, Mom! Your house, your rules. Tell him if he doesn't like it, he can move out. [Joystiq]

Good point about the Assassin's Creed 2 content, Alejandro. I never begrudged the situation, but I'll probably never download it. Unless it rocks, in which I will do it based on that fact. And Mom, really? Just throw some water on the console if he doesn't listen! Sheesh.

When it comes down to it on the DLC situation, I'm absolutely with Desilet's on another comment he made, which went as follows: [quote]I think we gave them so much content that they cannot say that we owe them, that we didn't give them a lot for their 60 bucks.[/quote] From great developers who put out a quality game, I can't begrudge them for wanting to make a little bit more cash and give their team a break after a job well done. Similarly, I didn't mind Dragon Age offering DLC right out of the gate because honestly, that game can give you over 100 hours of entertainment. Is the whole experience cheapened by charging extra for one more hour?

Not only do I agree with you guys, but wasn't it already pretty obvious that when the main quest skipped two DNA sequences - and DLC was announced - that we'd end up playing those two sequences some way or another? I don't really understand how it "removes some stress from the team," but whatever. I'm not really that surprised, and will almost certainly buy any DLC for ACII.

I sort of agree with you guys I just think that there is some douche-ery when you ADMIT that it was pulled and now being charged extra. They are basically telling people that you will now pay for stuff your initial purchase was going to cover because we were stressed. I'll probably get it because I really enjoyed AC2, but a dumb PR move.

@Bryan, the stress on the team is likely a reference to trying to get that part of the game done in time to meet the holiday release deadline.
