Pitfall Explorers' Club: A Real Achievement

Penn & Teller would have you believe that the good ol' days weren't exactly as good as nostalgia leads us to believe. We agree on every point -- except the goodies that you could send away for with old video games. The '80s were awesome for that.

If you were able to get 20,000 points in Pitfall and sent a picture of the score to Activision, you would receive a spiffy patch and a letter [via The Retroist]:

Pitfall-Patch-600x449

The good old days: Achievements came with real rewards. The letter is after the jump.

Ah the memories. My brother got the required score on River Raid for the Atari 2600 to send off for the patch, but we had to take a picture of the tv. Of course in those dark days of film there was no way to be sure you got the picture and no way to prove what you had done after you turn off the machine. Naturally not a single picture got a clear image of the screen. I don't think he ever played again.

You know, I think patches like this would be the coolest Achievement Awards that Microsoft could do. Sony as well. You know you'd have that one jacket, denim of course, with all your patches, that you kept hidden in the closet. But late at night when no one else was around, you'd fire up your console of choice, pull out that jacket...and either feel great or cry depending on how in touch you are with reality.

This reminds me of sending away proof-of-purchases for Star Wars action figures in the late '70s/early '80s and getting all kinds of sweet stuff.

@Jason: I used to do that with action figures from the early-to-mid '90s. Earthworm Jim action figures came with awesome prizes.

Wasn't there a Track and Field Activision patch promotion like this?
