Retro Ads: Consoles You Might Not Have Played

Early in my days of collecting video games, I said that I hoped to one day track down every console and display each lovingly in my home. This was met with hysterical laughter from my collector friends.

I soon discovered that to collect every console, I'd need a much bigger apartment, a sizable income, and likely some understanding of hardware repair and modification. The list of Pong machines and Atari 2600 clones is seemingly endless.

Because of this, you might be surprised by the early hardware you just haven't seen or touched. This edition of Retro Ads taunts you with a tantilizing display of crusty, old commercial goodness.

The Amstrad Gx4000 ad was super lame, no wonder no one bought it! The Magnavox Odyssey ad was hilarious, though. Every game looked like little box lights floating around. I can't believe all of these ads are available on YouTube. The real question though, who had these laying around?

I loved the Vectrex! Even though it wasn't really that good. My mom still has my machine -- need to get it from her someday....

Why is that kid shooting down fighter jets with a pistol?

@Dan I loved Vectrex, my roomies wouldn't allow me to monopolize the TV and in those days there wasn't a tv in every room. That game where you flew through caves shooting aliens was great! And the arcade music still haunts me to this day (though not in a good way). Funny to think that people complain so much about the cost of consoles when the "channel F" was $165 in 1977 (of course it did have 2 games built in ;-)
