Star Guard: Metroid Meets Mega Man

That's pretty much all you need to know to be able to play Star Guard. Metroidvania is a term used to describe something that shares the traits of Metroid and Castlevania. How do you describe a Metroid-Mega Man experience? To keep Jeremy Parish at bay, no further thought will be put into coining a new term.

Star Guard is similar to Metroid and Mega Man and comes with its own delightfully retro look. The game is relatively simple and, unlike the games it vaguely resembles, you are given infinite lives that you can waste to your heart's content through the nine levels [via reddit/vaccumflowers]:

Available for both the Mac and PC, you can download your very own version of the space-themed platformer here. If it is space-themed, why isn't the wizard an evil SPACE wizard?

I think I have a different definition in my head for Metroidvania, so this game wasn't exactly what I expected. It's a fun 2D shooter and platformer, but nothing more than that. There's no upgrade or rpg system that comes to mind when I think of Castlevania and Metroid.

Nor is there a single environment to explore over and over...at least not in the first few levels. But this is fun. It reminds me of Destructivator only much more lenient with the endless lives.
