Why do they annoy?

I've read countless stories about people being annoying on Xbox Live.

Over the last few weeks I've been playing WAY too much Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

There's something I've noticed that's began to irk me.

The people blasting music, yelling, blowing static into the microphone, or just being rude are doing it to their own team.

I understand smack talking the other team but what's the point of being that way to your own team?

A few things I've heard over just the last few matches I've played online:

Me: Hey (gamertag censored) you're mic is giving off a lot of static.
(A few minutes of static go by then static abruptly ends)
Gamertag Man: Hey, my mic working now, you whiny bi-----? This better for you, you motherf-----s?

Me: (Gamertag) can you please stop yelling?
Gamertag Man #2: Hey. Why don't you shut the f--- up? Shut up! I'm going to come over to your house and kill you, motherf-----!

What are the points of these exchanges?

I calmly told this player his mic was giving off annoying static, he fixes it, then proceeds to go off on me and other players.

The other person was yelling frequent obscenities and I calmly told him to quiet down.

The keyword in Team Deathmatch is TEAM. You're supposed to work together not bring each other down.

Only a handful of times have I heard an encouraging word from an anonymous teammate and it makes it all the more warming.

The few times I've heard things like "Come on team, we can do this" or "Keep it up (gamertag). We can win this" mean a lot to me when I'm playing and it actually encourages me to try harder and play better.

Only a handful of times can I have a decent conversation. Sometimes I can get off small talk about the javelin glitch patch or getting prestige but most of the time this is not the case.

Frankly, my fellow Bitmobbers, I'm sick and tired of muting people, giving bad feedback, and occasionally filing complaints against people.

I've tried figuring out why people do this.

Are they being annoying or rude to get attention?

That usually is the case. But I'm normally quiet on the mic and I typically only tell them to be quiet. When they go off on me I then quiet up again and just go on to mute them, give them the feedback, or file the complaint.

Normally no one else on the team is going off on them either.

Because of a level of anonymity are they playing the role of the internet tough guy?

I honestly can't figure out why people are doing this to their own team.

Do basketball players get on the court and start yelling and cussing their team out? Do they give out death threats? No. They work together. As a TEAM (not talking about the NBA here).

So my fellow Bitmobbers, any solutions, any stories you want to share?

I've resigned to having my voice chat option to "friends only" permanently. I used to turn it to "everyone" every so often, but not anymore. the pay off just isn't worth it in my opinion. because of that, the only people on my friends list are people I know in real life (with one exception). In terms of vocal players, the idiots are far more outspoken than the friendly players. It's especially evident in such a popular game like MW2. The best time i've ever had with Voice Chat was when Xbox Live was in beta and we had these beta versions of these online games. One of the games was this terribly generic party game called Whacked! But what made it so great was that everyone I played with were just throwing jokes out there and having a great time. maybe it was just the fact we were all excited to be able to try out xbox live... but I have some good memories of that crappy demo for that crappy game.

This culture had led me to play games that don't attract idiots. Some multiplayer games might be the most amazing fun to play but if you cannot share it properly it really diminishes the experience. I have found that I'd rather play games where this doesen't happen then try and find a way to enjoy a game such as MW2. I have never experienced anything approaching what you describe in the online components of L4D2 and skate 2 and to some extent Red Faction Guerrilla. There are nice safe havens on Xbox Live it is just a pity that the good people are the ones who have to make the effort
