EGM is coming back! The news of former EGMers coming back to join the magazine has me really excited. I will now finally be able to pick up a gaming print magazine. Looking back on when Ziff-Davis dissolved EGM and most people on 1up, I find myself somewhat thankful for it (other than the layoffs of good press writers). It taught me to expand my interests and take in other people's writings.
Back in the days of EGM, that was all I read. I subscribed to the magazine and read online at 1up (including watching the 1up show). When the day came that mostly everyone I looked up to was getting laid off, I was shocked. What would happen to my favorite writers? Where would I now look for gaming news? In time, I found that the off-shoots that laid off EGMers made were awesome. I have invested my time in listening to the podcasts (Rebel FM, Geekbox), watching Area 5 tv, and now writing on Bitmob. This helped continue the sense of the community that started back at EGM. I could continue to follow my inspirations and read, watch, and listen to their ideas.
As I said before, I had never invested my time in actually searching the world wide web for other sites to look at or read. The closure left me shellshocked, scrambling for gaming news and press. Upon arriving at each site, I would always compare it to 1up/EGM (and they never met my expectations). I have learned to love other sites now. I frequently visit giantbomb.com (which is hilarious btw), IGN (which is good for news, reviews are ehhh), and much more. I feel that 1up/EGM was my momma bird for gaming press. They raised me up and with the closure, threw me out of the nest and expected me to fly. And I did.
With EGM finally coming back, it has me certainly excited. I'm not quite interested in any other print magazines and prefer reading print than from my computer. I hope that with the EGM legends flocking back to the magazine, that their sites continue to remain intact. I know that work may conflict with running these sites, but I hope to continue writing on Bitmob. Even if they pass the website torches off to others, I hope they cans till contribute to their creations. The question is, will I still want these sites when an EGM magazine shows up at my door. Well now to all the soon to be EGMers once again, I salute you (and most of the internet do).
