Remaking classics, hm, taking a tip from Hollywood are we?
In all seriousness, the progress of gaming technology allows the re-imagining of gaming classics that strive (for the most part) to re-create the innovative gameplay mechanics found in the originals while taking advantage of more immersive graphics and technology-based mechanics. The movie industry, to an extent, can do this too but often turn to old classics merely as a way to make a quick buck.
As gamers, as long as we demand these remakes re-introduce classics to new gamers in a way that preserves their charm--developers can (and will) do just that. If we let them get away with crappy remakes then we're all doomed.
On the question of whether it's possible or not: it is. Look at Nintendo, they've been re-inventing their franchises for decades with each new iteration successfully preserving what the originals games did well.
This being said, Deus Ex looks incredible. Day one for me. And XCOM? Well they've got good talent over there, just not sure if an FPS can really capture that XCOM feel. While popular, Fallout 3 was a very different game than 1 & 2, both because of the FPS style and new (but talented) developer."

The key to standing out in the crowd is to focus on the realities of war. Civilians, women & children, everyone should be victims. A war game should frighten you with it's realism.
Too many current titles turn war into an arcade without really conveying the cruelness of reality. Granted, this wouldn't work well for multiplayer-heavy titles like CoD, but a strong, brutally realistic single-player bundled with a deep multiplayer would go far in capturing both sides of the war market."
