"You make a number of really brilliant points here. Final Fantasy XIII's streamlined design really was an inspired, yet ultimately misguided, attempt to advance the JRPG formula. Who knew that people actually wanted to backtrack to towns to buy stuff instead of being able to do so from any save point? The developers just underestimated how much their core audience values little things that, from the standpoint of a games maker, are outdated at this point from a design perspective. As someone who loves both XIII and XIII-2, you can't deny XIII's quality, only it's design decisions; and conversely, you can rage against XIII-2's story all you want, but dammit if it isn't fun."
