Now that I think about it, NieR does something kinda like that, too, since you have to beat the game multiple times to get the true ending, and you see new stuff on each playthough (or so I've heard; I'm still on my first playthrough), and it got about the same reception. I guess not everyone likes new and crazy mechanics. :("
I did make that same choice, although I was completely torn by it, due to other plot mechanics. Hey, why bother if... well, you know."
I guess it's kind of lucky that XSeed wants to publish Falcom's games in the West now. While it probably won't start a revolution of new fans, at least the die-hard fans can get their hands on some goodness."
Of course, easy games are the only thing my boyfriend and I can really play together without getting on each other's nerves; I'm much like your girlfriend in the aspect of getting other players killed. :("
Anyway, considering Vita, it's really far too early to say much. The system's only been out for about two weeks in Japan, and it's far too early to say it's 'in trouble'. I'll admit that it seems like a bad launch, but I believe that the holiday rush hurt the system more than helped it. Since it came out only days before Christmas, and not in late November/early December like most holiday grabs, people probably already bought their loved ones gifts (and cheaper ones, too!).
Also, I might be wrong on this, but I think the PSP was more popular in America, at least at first. Since the Vita is launching with nothing to compete against, it seems likely that it'll sell better opening week than it did in Japan.
But hey, only time will tell. :)"
I was so estactic when the third FINALLY came out last year, and while I throughly enjoyed the adventure, I was not happy with the introduction of missable Djinns. In the first game (and probably the second, my mind is fuzzy about it), while no Djinn was missable, it would be a massive pain to go back in get them. Dark Dawn let you miss them forever, though, and it made me upset since I had too many Water Djinn for most of the game.
Still, though, a great, forgotten little series. Hope it doesn't take seven years for the fourth entry to come out!"
For starting players, though, I would recommend the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance games. While they aren't the simplest SRPGs, everything is explained well in the game, and the quest-based story allows you to progress when you feel ready, instead of having to consolidate experience and resources like in games like Fire Emblem."
