FEATURED POST
Sithlords2
I look at the much-delayed, little-known effort to restore and fix the cut content of Star Wars: KOTOR 2 by reviewing the history of the modders' attempts to do so and discussing why it might still be relevant to gamers.

The third and final part in my series looking at what's holding back videogames from being respected. In this final installment, I look at game journalists.

I continue my three-part look at some of the problems that may be holding back the videogame indyustry from gaining the respect it deserves, this time focusing in on devlopers and what they can do to help fix the problem.

The first in a 3-part series looking at what kind of activities hurt the image of the videogame industry and how we can fix said problems. For the first part, I'm looking at you, the Fans.

Have game makers gone too far in their attempts to push the envelope? I try to figure out what rising budgets mean for the industry as a whole.

An account of my time spent in the Mass Effect forums on Bioware.com. I look back at my experience and try to find what can be learned about the obsessively dedicated fan(boys?) of the games we only play once then move on.

"This made me think of an original Law and Order episode from a while back about some kid who got violent after playing some Doom/Quake approzimation and ending up having deadly ninja weapons in his house.

Still, I didn't think this was any worse than the sterotypes always displayed on Law and Order for any subsection of society."

"So far, I minimum specs haven't prevented me from playing a game but I got damn close with Mass Effect 2 and I fear I may not be able to play Mass Effect 3 when that finally surfaces.  I feel your pain."

"My biggest problem is that the topics can be generic.  Favorite game of E3...cause no one else is talking about that right?"

"I think as long as the die rolls are not obnoxiously obvious like they are in some games.  A certain level of player skill is needed when playing an active battle system like a shooter.  But die rolls still have their place.  To simplify it:  Good when die rolls determine damage, crits, and whether a near miss becomes a hit.  They're bad when my reticule is right on a guy and die rolls cause the shot to miss or do negligable damage.  Thankfully, the latter is very rare."

"Creative direction screwed up by o a few focus testers, a biker dude.  Creative integrity compromised.  I won't hold it against the game but that's lame."

"I think you're right.  I've never really been a  huge fan of Sonic but I've always been somewhat fascinated by the franchise's direction.  Interesting article."

"Excellent point."

"Perhaps phrasing it in the sense of "winning" is wrong but I think it's disingenuous to dismiss the opinons on whether people were unhappy or happy with each press conference.  Sure, Microsoft doesn't care about a Neogaf thread and certainly won't change their business tactics, but that's not the point.  The point is expressing our opinions."

"For an article not discussing this nameless critic, you sure do mention him alot."

"I hear people like Garnet Lee(sorry for calling you out) often say they're not real journalists.  Well, there's a problem right there.  Embrace and partake in real journalism and the medium's authenticity in the mainstream will follow. "

"You make very good points and I agree completely.  However, it must be remembered that many(like myself) didn't like FF13 simply because it wasn't enjoyable to us.  I was excited for this game because it was different, but the game had so much hand-holding, bad melodrama, and poor pacing that I just couldn't go any further.  The linearity was fine, I feel that FF13's biggest problem is that the devs place no trust in the gamer to understand the systems without doling them out at a very slow pace."

"I'm not going to pretend that I know better than everyone and that any solution I come up with will be better than DRM.  But I will say that DRM is a serious problem that at least needs to be tweaked to the point where it doesn't f*** with consumers on such a massive scale."
