I did some research on the idea of video games as a "Folk Devil" in college. Our culture is a media-centric one and the media literally jumps at the opportunity to provide a sensational story that people will watch. Instead of looking at contextual information, such as background, class, or upbringing when looking at violent people or incidents, our media sometimes creates “folk devils” (a term coined by the American Sociological Association), which allow the media (and the general public) to channel their fears and blame into something palpable-- something tangible and easy to understand as "violent."
Sometimes, video games provide an excellent folk devil. Many people don't understand video games, view violence out of context, or have extremely limited views of them (for example seeing the "No Russian" level on Fox news.) This allows them to utilize extreme prejudice because they are encountering something they don't know much about (much like cars, rock and roll music, or comic books in past decades) When violence increases or a violent incident occurs, everyone looks to blame something, instead of thinking of the big picture and realizing how multifaceted these kinds of issues can be.
