Uncharted 3's taxing puzzles break the gamer's sense of immersion. "Cheating" is an acceptable solution.

Breakups are never easy. My recent fling with Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together rekindled my passion for the JRPG (my “ex”). But it also reminded me why I dumped her in the first place.

If great artists steal, then Resistance 3 must be the best game of all time. Over the course of 8-10 hours, there’s not an original idea to be had.

The industry has declared war on consumer rights. Their missiles -- always-on DRM, online passes, digital distribution -- run the gamut. But the intent is the same: to kill the secondary market, destroy the notion of “ownership,” and control all means of distribution.

At PAX Prime 2011, Kim Swift demoed Quantum Conundrum for the first time. As you’ll see, QC carves its own niche, while paying tribute to the rich legacy of Portal. Fans of Valve’s physics-based puzzler will feel right at home.

The latest from Portal co-creator Kim Swift is a physics-based puzzler called Quantum Conundrum. So...kind of like Portal.
Jaffe
David Jaffe hears voices. Don't worry; he's perfectly sane. His creative vision "speaks" to him...something about angry Greek albinos and anthropomorphic ice cream trucks.

A proper introduction to Jason Lomberg: Bitmob editor, Phillies/Eagles fan, and all around great guy. Yes, ladies, he's single.

Digital media robs consumers of the most fundamental of property rights: what’s mine is mine. For publishers, it’s win-win: reduced overhead, no first-sale doctrine, and a dead secondary market. For consumers, it’s a Faustian bargain: convenience in exchange for the forfeiture of ownership rights.

"I find it extraordinarily difficult to relate to the bombastic, 'save the world' scenarios presented in most games. And if I have trouble emphathizing with my virtual avatar, then I become, in effect, a mere spectactor and not a participant,

IMHO, the best games provide a highly-personal, accessible scenario (like a father bonding with his sons, as Rob mentions) that allows the gamer to connect with the protagonist. I can't get that experience in your average FPS. Granted, going to war and being in combat is a potent experience, but most people have no basis upon which to relate to it (apart than playing other first-person shooters)."

"ESPN has also broadcast the World Series of Poker and Magic: The Gathering, and I wouldn't consider either one "sports.""

"Nathaniel, video games share many aesthetic and artistic similarities with movies, books, and other sources of entertainment. But the only real similarity between gaming and sports is competition...and that's a stretch.

I say this a great admirer of both sports and video games: We should not confuse athletes with gamers."

"But where do we draw the line, Jay? Do we consider any organized competition, whether it involves physical activity or not, a "sport"? Is Risk a sport? Chess? They're fun diversions, mind you; their tactical nature engages the mind. But I wouldn't call them "sports".

We need some sort of standards...otherwise, the term becomes vague and, ultimately, meaningless. I would submit that activities like baseball, football, and even bowling deserve to be classified as "sports." Gaming is just fine as a competition or source of entertainment."

"Gaming isn't, never has been, and never will be a "sport." Nor are gamers "athletes." Call it fun. Call it art. Call it entertainment. But gaming is no more a "sport" than Monopoly or Poker. And I'm not sure why some are so insistent on shoving a square peg into a round hole.

And the denizens of MLG are terrible ambassadors for the medium. Give me Jenova Chen. Or Peter Molyneux. Or David Cage. But the stereotypical image of crass, sexist FPS players does gaming no favors."

"If you mean the mobfeed, not everyone sees that. I, for example, caught this from the home page. Traditionally, we put a short note at the beginning of the article. Thanks for your prompt attention to this, though. Any article that deals with storytelling catches my eye immediately."

"Good piece, Mark. I would suggest a spoiler warning, however."

"In both of those situations, Madison feels vulnerable, and you're meant to experience her emotions vicariously. I think the game does a fantastic job at conveying such feelings.

The fact that Madison finds herself in compromising situations does not make her portrayal distateful and/or sexist. A degenerate like Paco Mendez would naturally seek to victimize women...same with the insane doctor.

Moreover, Madison isn't forced to strip (at least not very far). The game actually rewards you with a trophy for leaving most of your clothes on. And Madison isn't "invited" to an old man's home. She goes there seeking illicit medication. And the old man intended to perform medical experiments on her, not rape her. Though, again, I'm not sure how the accurate portrayal of a sociopathic mindset (i.e. one that might perform rape and/or murder) is a mark against the game.

If anything about Madison seemed gratutitous -- say her chest was larger than her head or she wore impractical, skimpy clothing -- I might concede the point. But she just seems like a plucky journalist who injects herself into dangerous situations and, therefore, finds herself in danger."

"Madison Paige doesn't conform to recognized gender stereotypes. Her getting naked (or using her sexuality) doesn't in and of itself make the game sexist."

"Do I smell a rebuttal piece? :) Sounds like you'd have a lot to say."

"I'm of two minds on this subject. I think the portrayal of the female anatomy in games like Dead or Alive and Mortal Kombat (2011) is ludicrous and it degrades the medium. On the other hand, I'm a hot-blooded male who enjoys the female body, and I have no problem with its tasteful portrayal in games like Heavy Rain.

In fact, gaming's refusal to embrace a mature presentation of sexuality (for the most part) is yet another factor keeping it in the cultural stone age."
