Unlockable content creates a barrier to entry for new or busy gamers and leads to disparities in online play. So why bother?

"veryone, Apologies for never being online for the discussions, time differece between U.K and U.S complicates things ;) @ Harold, I think your point definitely has scope for a post! I'm not sure what you mean by charging gamers to opt into different parts of development points, but the concept sounds interesting to explore... @ David, I hear what you mean about poor demos bro! I really think the AvP demo really doesn't do the game justice, but then I've never played the whole game to really know-Catch 22 really :o @ Jonathan, thank you for such an in-depth response! I hear what you mean about the importance of referring to reviews of full games "In recent years I rely more on an evaluation of a handful of review sites and services that have actually gotten their hands on the full games." In the end, demos are just a peep hole into the game, what lies behind that door is anyones guest until they unwrap and play the full release. Again, thank you for your post :D @Brett, if you liked the demo, would you buy the game? especially if you weren't sure about it before the demo? @ Lance, I know what you mean about online multiplayer demos! especially when multiplayer is attached to so many games now, you have to wonder if its there because the market wants it or if its because the game actually plays well in a multiplayer environment (I'm looking at you Bioshock"

"at stuff - I'm trying to learn about how America Football works. I've bought maddon 08 and with all the stats and "realism" placed into the game, it's quite hard to figure out the fundamental basics of playing offensive and defensive. I know I need to get the ball to the touch line but choosing the right play to do so is freakin hard! Defending is even h"

"at stuff guys. I particularly take interest in Brian Biederman's piece as I have recetnly bought an nfl game in the vain hope to understand American football better! ;D sadly it wasn't NFL blitz 2000 but I'll definitely keep an eye out for it when I figure out what audibles, reading the play etc is all ab"

"rett, I'm the same as you regarding my FF experience. After 7 I tried FF8 but never got into it. After that, I never revisited the franchise. However, the fact that you found FFXiii a fun experience certainly adds confidence to my thought of revisiting the franchise. For me ff7 hooked me in with the story. keen to hear more of your thoughts in the near futu"

"rian, thanks man :D my original interest was to find out what the difference was between western RPG's and Japanese RPG's and playing DQ8 certainly brought some of those differences to the surface for me. @ nick, if you find the time, definitely give it a go - the graphics look really outdated especially having played New Gen games but the experience is certainly one to have - though the time invested is definitely intense. If you like Jap RPG's its certainly an option to check out although you may find the story a tad "childlike" - however I found that the most appealing part as it made it fun and relaxing play through - kinda like enjoying a cartoon with your kids or younger sibl"

"ichael, they gave me a like-for-like system, therefore if you have the 80gb backwards compatible they should give you another system of the same spec. They will also offer you the newer version but I wanted all the extras from the original spec. I also wanted my original ps3 back but they couldn't provide that option for me (they never explained why) . I hope you get the $$$ as it really sucks to have paid out and not be able to use the system. I wish Sony could help with offering monthly payments or something. good luck and let me know how it pans out for you if you choose to go down that p"

"at piece and I agree with you, I hope print will never die (and I don't think it will for the simple explanation you gave about the experience of reading printed pages) but what goes to print will become more valuable than its counter part on the net. Digital media is about distribution - hard copies may evolve to provide a different experience (and the fact that it is free from general critique is an important one). I remember attending a huge conference about information in the future and how e-mail and e-portofolios etc will do away with paper. A decade later and paper is still integral in any company operation be it in the form of a brief, archived data, legal policies etc. Magazines/newspapers will not disappear but what goes into them may well become more selec"
