"Stafford (England) is home to Staffordshire University's games academy, the foremost games design higher education centre in the UK. It has close ties to Codemasters amongst other developers and the Midlands counts Eidos and several other major companies as their own.

A little further away, the city of Nottingham has Nottingham Trent Uni which is is well known for its experimental research in games and interactive technology. They also host the annual GameCity festival, though sad to say I've not been since a few years ago."

"The reveal of SHODAN in SS2 - the world falls away, leaving just you, a desk and Polito's long dead body in a vast virtual hall filled with Her face. It chills you to the core as you realise your one hope of aid was this monstrous, demented AI playing you all along.

BioShock, Fort Frolic - all of it actually. The stand out moment is Walts of the Flowers playing through the mall's tanoy system while you dance, wrench in one hand and lightening in the other, killing a flood of splicers in time with the tune.

Call of Duty 2's breathless charge up the banks of the Volga under heavy fire, comrades dying left and right and with nothing but a clip and no gun in hand... but, ducking from cover to cover and with the aid of a friendly sniper, you make it up the hill alive.

And a personal one: Mass Effect 2, Zaeeds' personal mission. Shepard, Garuus and Zaeed charging through an enemy stronghold packed with murderous Blue Sun mercs, cutting them down left and right and blowing shit up as they go with no consideration for 'civilians'. They worked with Blue Sun, they died."

"ouldn't help it! I worked through BioShock 2 in ten hours or so in a Wednesday without any lectures to take up my time but would by amazed if I'd missed anything of note or any interesting detail. I did achieve the Rapture Historian achievement. I am a naturally quick player - got through Dragon Age in 44 hours though followed every available quest line. That being said, I immediately started on a second play through of both games and take them somewhat more leisurely. And likely will a third ti"

"course this argument is only relevant if the player character is a generic role (soldier, ranged magic user, one with a higher jump stat etc) and not a fully fleshed character in the traditional sense. I know it's not the point you're making in your article, but it would be pointless if not entirely counter-productive to incorporate a female variant PC for Batman: Arkham Asylum (the clue's in the name) or, conversely, a male counter-part for Jade of Beyond Good and Evil. Giving players the option of male or female isn't always appropriate. To do so in such cases would imply that they are genders, while patently of equal worth and ability, are inter-changable and have no bearing upon the character and their relationship with the world around"

"hould hope that no religion promises eternal damnation for merely imagining or recreating sinful acts in the form of entertainment or education. In such a case, simply reading their holy text of choice would damn oneself a thousand times over. Those who claim it is detrimental or corruptive to the 'moral fibre' of their adherents to be aware of 'sinful' acts only expose their lack of (heh) faith in themselves and their people. The most troubling element, to my mind, is the danger of religious groups considering their beliefs to be untouchable, that somehow they are above examination or analysis. It seems that a great deal of the complaints against religious content in games by religious groups is motivated by this fear of being contradicted, and interactive entertainment is simply the softest target. Of course the above is simply a personal observation. Disclaimer: I'm an agnostic with vaguely spiritual leanings (more out of hope and love of modern-fantasy that rational belief) who considers organised religion to be primarily a form of cultural manipul"
