Most guys constantly ask themselves how they'll survive if a life-or-death situation broke out RIGHT NOW. Thankfully, Portal lets us live out that fantasy without, you know, risking death.

"I know my gaming has continued to shrivel as I've gotten older and I've found much of what Layton writes to be true for me as well. Of course, as I get further into games writing I've tried to reverse the trend of playing fewer hours on fewer games. I'd like to think I'd be even more successful if my Xbox didn't just crap out on me yesterday."

""Winning" or "losing" in the way E3 is discussed is simply the application of a generic media angle. It's the same thing as when a stations airs a soundbite of two arguing politicians then a host turns to a team of pundits and asks "Who won?" Nevermind that votes are the deciding factor in those debates just as consumer dollars are the deciding factor in the video game market. It's just an easy way to sell a story."

"Yup, this is a tough review. I'm still playing through it and while I also have gripes with the combat system, I think the simple pleasures of running around killing people earned AC2 a higher score. At least in my book. "

"@Daniel Really? A Cube video game would be a total blast. You should be able to control different characters each with their own set of skills. Perhaps it could even be a multiplayer puzzle game with players having to work together to disarm booby traps and escape. I'm trying to think of any other game that's even remotely like this and I can't. Great idea.
@Chase I hadn't thought about that, but you could be right on the money. And I firmly believe that everything is improved with a dose of The Big Lebowski.
@Randy The same escape elements are in Logan's Run but I think it's a little different from Portal. I haven't seen the movie or read the book but I know that the main characters are trying to escape an AI who uses a human police force to capture/kill them. The whole AI entity with a desire for control is the same, but the film doesn't seem to have the same emphasis on pure puzzle solving which is almost entirely what Cube and Portal are about in my mind."

"Games tend to be more fun when they're enjoyed with friends. I also never thought of strategy games as being fun to watch but it's great when you can share those experiences with others. "

"Of all the things Heavy Rain could get wrong, it sure sucks that one of its biggest flaws had to be the voice acting. Thanks for the heads up."

For a while after college I lived at home and was a total bum outside of my day job. Once I moved out and had to pay for rent, food and loans, that's when I got my hustle. Good luck on finding yours."
