Is killing always the ultimate means to an end in games? Should Cloud and Sephiroth have gone to the negotiating table in Final Fantasy 7? Can we spin positive themes out from the violent story of Assassin's Creed 2 -- ideas like protecting what one holds dear and the importance of family? Or am I blowing everything way out of proportion?

With the recent re-release of Ogre Battle 64 -- one of Mike Gingras's favorite games -- on the Wii's Virtual Console, he got to thinking about good games that aren't well represented in mainstream gaming. The "hidden gems," if you will. Here are his favorites.

"Well, I focused this on mainstream titles because, realistically, the audience for the blog is mostly interested in playing the latest and greatest. I think, for me, I have a difficult time finding a lot of the games you mention mostly because I'm piecing together a few jobs and only really know a few places to look for them. A piece on where to find the best indie games for the lowest prices could definitely be a feature I'd be interested in reading."

"Competitive multiplayer is a great way to extend game time, but you're right, it needs to be a game where people still play consistently. I've been trying to get the Overlord II multiplayer online trophies, but there's never anybody playing it."

"@Juan: You're thinking about that part differently than I was. Oprah is not the reason that we have a focus on African-American history in schools, but we do have people constantly reinforcing the positive achievements of this group. The explanation is such that there is no national outcry about curriculum not including Hispanic-American achievements, and until there is, we won't have it. All of these things were discussed with the students at the time."

"Thanks for the kind words gentlemen, and Jason, i'm trying to get a memorial together for her...it's really kind of hard because unlike real friends and family, there's not the same sense of collective mourning where we can go and pay our respects....in this instance, virtual friendships aren't as satisfying"

"Very interesting to see how others do it....I just kind of wait until I have an idea I think is interesting enough for an entry, which is why there's so much space in between blogs, but I'd love to be able to think up things on command like some of these fine writers do...great idea!"

"I really like what you guys are putting out there, but have any of you had a game where the messages were positive? I'm really having a hard time finding some"

"As a secondary educator, I know that my students like Call of Duty way more than learning about the Great Depression. I think the real time most students check out mentally is high school, because they are finally getting some freedom and a lot of distractions arise from it. I try to make references to video game culture in my classroom, but I'm not sure that when they get older, educational games would make my students take more notice than endless time sinks. I sure would love to see someone try to make an educational game for older students though."

"@Austin: I usually like more Japanese style games, so naturally my list reflects my personal tastes. However, i'd love to hear of some Western games you think are under appreciated :) I always like to see new things"

"Well, I'd say they may be best described as "unknowns," since a lot of people overlooked them for more powerfully hyped games...I think that underrated and under appreciated are close enough to the same, since I don't equate underrated with low gamer scores because these games mostly got good scores"

"The gameplay for Muramasa isn't as deep as it could be, you're right. I thought the story telling was excellent however, for which I was willing to forgive some of the repitition...running from map to map each time does bite though"

"I have a hard time with 3D action games like Assassin's Creed. I like to try, but the open world part of it just means I can get lost quicker and fall out of touch with where I'm supposed to be. If they could add a simple feature like a path to PC button, it would make it so much more manageable for me...it could even be optional, but hell try it!"
