One downloadable racing game's success could potentially adjust the industry's distribution focus. How you respond to it will dictate the future.

This video series, based on Discovery Channel's Mythbusters, separates Bad Company 2's possible from the impossible. Use these brief documentaries to better your skills, expand your knowledge, and win debates about what absurd things are doable or not.

Whether you miss Penny Arcade Expo or missed it altogether, you can still catch up on the event's best panels. Some developers, publishers, and press recorded their presentations for posterity, and you can learn (or laugh) a lot from each of these top-notch PAX Prime panels.
Battlevschess
Budget games aren't always terrible. TopWare's Battle vs. Chess is a fantastic-looking chess game with all the trappings of a regular retail game. Its discounted price is one of many reasons to get excited about it.
Worms
Team 17's Worms: Reloaded defies expectations. Rather than simply retreading old ground -- which it does, mind you -- Reloaded adds a handful of killer new content to complement its established ideas.

Digital distribution relies on the fact that players have the Internet. So why do developers of downloadable games deliberately neglect online co-op in their multiplayer games?

Going to the 2010 Penny Arcade Expo in September? This survival guide should answer any questions you have. Oh, and the Penny Arcade team answer a few questions you didn't think to ask.
Deathspank2
This week's debut of The Twitter Verdict -- which focuses on Twitter users' responses to the goings-on of the games industry -- asks a simple yet semi-controversial question: how soon is too soon for a DeathSpank sequel?

Uber Entertainment's Monday Night Combat is a killer Xbox Live Arcade title. These fun facts about its development -- sent straight from the team -- are similarly awesome.

This week I check out Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, which adjusts the franchise's awesome ideas for the better.
Bioshockinfinite
Critics and gamers adored Irrational Games' BioShock... so why are some of them reluctant to like the idea of a sequel? We examine the negative responses to the BioShock Infinite reveal.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2's Onslaught mode isn't a throwaway cash-in -- it's a challenging, fulfulling experience that's an entirely different game in its own right.

"You've got a serious logical leap in your implications here, Dennis. You begin by pointing out high scores, suggesting they're only high because outlets wanted the traffic -- certainly possible, but you've got no justification here -- then simply showing an image of other reviewers with lower scores. Granted, I know where you're coming from: Larger outlets think less of the game, which is why thier reviews were restricted to embargo. However, presenting the images one after another and simply implying some sort of corruption. Furthermore, you admit to having no experience with this sort of thing when you mention you can't provide sources. These are heavy claims for hearsay."

"In other words, "You're all terrible at your job, you hate video games, and you are stupid. I love you all anyway.""

"Keith: At no point did I associate Halo, in game or novel form, on the same narrative or literary level as a Spielberg film or King novel. I had expectations going in, yes, but I didn't expect Reach to become my favorite story, comparable with Gaiman or Palahniuk. You're adding something to this equation that needn't be here.

Standing on its own merits, and as something existing in a universe I love, Reach disappointed separate from my expectations and associations. Relative to The Fall of Reach or not, the story didn't go anywhere and the characters were limp. That aside, the game itself irritated me -- you seem to think my only issue is in its story, when that's a secondary fault I had with it as a whole."

"I think the gameplay's fine, but that the mission encounters aren't interesting to me. I remember so many great moments from every other Halo game, but where are the "Oh, man, remember that crazy thing?" events to reminisce about? I strongly disliked how thorughly dull the design was, especially compared to all the exciting moments in earlier games.

@Nick: Write away! The more voices to argue alternate sides, the better!"

"I'm not saying the story is what kept me playing the other games -- that Reach's story stinks is a contributing factor to my dislike of a dull campaign."

"I am by no means ashamed of my career in writing about games. But I find myself constantly explaining myself more sheepishly than I intend. I'm immensely proud of my job, but when someone asks what I do, it's a triumphant 'I AM A FREELANCE WRITER" followed by "ahem video games" when he/she inevitably asks "about what?"

More often than not, people are interested, which is why I don't understand the dumbstruck feeling that washes over me. I always assume people will laugh in my face. It's yet to happen."

"I'm certain I heard someone say they're not doing a DVD this year. I think that makes sense given the PATV crew was filming everything. I wonder if they'll distribute the panels online..."

"I don't like the Grand Theft Auto series at all, but I'm going to echo the earlier sentiments: Those games are a blast when you're cheating. It's the only way I ever get anything out of 'em."

""During battle sequences, you'll cut and clobber your way through a small army of enemies until everyone on either side dies."

It's difficult to explain what this is without going into the boring details, but the basics of what I saw is as follows: You try to take my piece, and everything else disappears. It zooms to the board, and you duke it out with a bunch of guys. You control one at a time."

"I'm not trying to say that I'm entitled to anything, because I know all too well that I'm not. I'm simply saying that it sucks when games don't have online co-op. I'm also just bummed and confused that games I can only play if I have the internet regularly neglect online multiplayer.

I like offline multiplayer as much as the next guy, but "it has offline multiplayer" is not an effective argument for defending the lack of online co-op. But Daniel's right -- you can't please everyone."

"Bryan: This article is about my personal interests and experiences. I am in no way trying to dictate what is and isn't for anyone else.

Nick: Different situation, similarly busy. You nailed it. I'm in college and my roommates find games interesting rather than entertaining, and all my pals live hours or provinces or countries away. Online is where we prefer to meet up because it's a realistic option.

You and Greg are right, perhaps "Unfortunate" is a better word. That it's so common in downloadable titles -- downloadable! I need the Internet to access them *at all*! -- just blows me away. And again, I realize it's not as simple as one guy punching the "ACTIVATE ONLINE MULTIPLAYER" button and calling it a day.

I'm trying to keep in mind people like my friends -- they don't follow game development at all, and they don't understand this. I'm guessing a lot of people don't. So, yes, there is a lot of background work that happens to create an online infrastructure. For people who don't know this -- and I'm repeating myself in saying "those who DO know as well" -- might still feel like they're missing out on something.

With Shank and Scott Pilgrim, I feel like there's something missing. With Guardian of Light, I *know* something's missing. Single-player's awesome, and so is couch co-op, but for those of us without that option -- or who find arranging something like that incredibly difficult -- look for some sort of online-enabled component to compensat"
