FEATURED POST
Splinter-cell-conviction-screenshot
Why are fans worried about the new direction of Splinter Cell CONVICTION? Are there genuine complaints or is this just fanboy entitlement to their franchise? I argue that the new approach of aggressive stealth recently seen in the Batman game is the future of stealth games, and how change is good for the long-standing Splinter Cell franchise.

"Have you played the game? If not, shut up" -- how "informed" opinion isn't the same as actually playing the game.
Regettingadell
What went wrong with Dante's Inferno, and yet why it's still an unmissable game for anyone wanting an unforgettable journey through Hell.
Drake
Uncharted 2 raised the bar for cinematic action in games, last year. But with the technological spectacle, I feel it missed out in other departments, and brought out a different kind of uncanny valley. Nathan Drake is a dick, too.
Files
A few comparisons to the videogame industry's most tenacious characters shows how sadistic Nathan Drake's character really is.

"What is your preferred method of storytelling in a game? Should First-Person Shooters even have cutscenes? Are you still impressed with a seamless narrative, as the camera pans away from the cutscene and goes straight into gameplay?

Happy 100 episode anniversay!"

"When I was playing RDR, the missions were the huge problem. The missions themselves were just predictable, repetitive, and forgettable (can you remember more than 5 missions in detail?). These are linear missions in an open world game, so they're not even utilising all the work they put into the world design.

Which is why I loved the hunting, plant collecting, treasure hunting, and Stranger missions that forced you to explore the open world.

Great article, and makes me want to check out DEAD RISING. Unlike others, the time limit appeals to me, must make for a more intense playthrough. "

"I'm really surprised to see XCOM on the top of Demian Linn's list, considering a lot of people are disappointed with the new direction and that it looks like a generic shooter with ink blobs."

"Scary movies don't scare me as much as scary games. It's because they're interactive, so you actually have to explore every nook and cranny of this oppressive world. The only movie to truly scare me from beginning to end is [Rec].

If you haven't played Condemned: Criminal Origins, you're in for the most terrifying virtual experience of your life. And the game doesn't have monsters!

How can a game without monsters be scary? You'll have to play to find out!

"Another good game I hate is, God of War. The combat is so shallow, even Dante's Inferno has more options and challenge. The platforming is horrid, with bad camera angles causing more deaths than actual fights. The enemy AI is pathetic for an action game in this day and age. And Kratos is such a one-note character that he becomes a caricature in the 3rd game. AAREEEES!

And seriously, screw Quick Time Events or button prompts. Now every action game is ruined by them. Even good games are ruined with God of War's stupid design choices, like Dante's Inferno.

"Good games I hate: Gears of War 1/2. One of the most boring games I've ever played, you just stick to cover, do a little whack-a-mole because if you get off cover then you'll die because of terrible aiming and fire from all angles. The characters are jokes, but sometimes the atmosphere is great underground in part 2.

Uncharted 2. The first Uncharted game was an average game that was hyped because of PS3 owners. The platforming is very automated, so it's hard to compare this game to any decent platformer with challenge. I hate a lot of things about Nathan Drake, not least of which he is a sadistic sociopath. The shooting is better than Gears, you move faster, and there's great levels, whereas 1st game had the jungles that became too repetitive. I explained a lot more in my own article here on Bitmob.

Bad Games I Love: Kane and Lynch. The unpredictable story, complex characters, dark tone, kickass music, and memorable levels totally suck me in. The enemies can get repetitive, but at least they change clothes for each level, like the bikers in the Tokyo level. The levels look almost photorealistic, set in the real world, and just the character interplay during gameplay with everyone bickering is just refreshing after games with lacklustre ally interaction (Uncharted, Gears of War, Army of Two). Let's hope the shooting mechanics are tightened for part 2, so then more people can see the potential of this dark crime thriller franchise.

"Great, enlightening article. I loved Dante's Inferno for its strong storytelling and themes. None of the nudity or sexual themes are there to excite you, they're there to disgust you. This is Hell, and you (Dante) are not meant to have arousing thoughts from such a place. This must be a first for videogames, where sexuality has been made abrasive.

The only movie I've seen where sexuality is abrasive is, (the most messed up movie ever made) SALO OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM where any sexual act makes your stomach churn and make you want to throw up. If you don't want to think about sex in a nice way, I guess that's the movie for you.

"How is this a Japanese RPG?"

"The answer to that question is a resounding "YES". Which is why I'm putting a media blackout for anything related to Alan Wake or Kane & Lynch 2.

There are very few games these days that I don't know quite a bit about before going in. It's worse when people start criticizing or loving a game before it even comes out on forums, with severe levels of hyperbole. "
