"I put the experience of playing the game above any collectibles or achievements. Which is why I ignored the dog tags in Gears of War 1 & 2 and the backpacks in Mirror's Edge unless the were in plain sight.
I stopped looking for collectibles in Alan Wake after the first episode and I think I had a better experience because of this. When I felt the need to run, I ran without any hesitation because this is what the character would do.
I think collectibles like the ones in Alan Wake tend to work better in open world games. It's just becomes something extra to do once you've completed the main game."
