It's no secret that Bioshock 2 didn't *need* a sequel. It was a great game, isolated in its narration and its creativity. But after a run-through of the sequel, I'm compelled to re-think what necessitates a sequel, and when tacking on a '2' isn't just a money grab.

After recently going through a break up, I came upon a surprisingly revelation: I just couldn't enjoy video games anymore.

You'd think after 2 years, the gig would be up for Portal. Stooped beneath solid gameplay mechanics lies a puzzle game that fundamentally holds dear to its quirky, atmospheric kind-of story and its unique premise. Has it grown old?

Shortly after building a new PC, the first thing I did was go out and grab the Orange Box. How does Half Life 2 hold up almost 5 years after its initial release?

Current generation games have put an increasingly large focus on online multiplayer, often neglecting the option of split screen altogether. Is the age of online really better?

Mass Effect, in traditional Bioware fashion, is an incredibly solid yet slightly flawed video game. One has to wonder, at this point, if they don't the jump from "great" to "perfect" just because it'd ruin the fun.

A lot of gamers feel that using a guide lessens the meaning of one's achievements in the game -- others use strategy guides and walkthroughs almost religiously. I draw the line where using a guide is okay, and when you're just ruining the fun for yourself.

Perfect Dark XBLA is coming out around the corner and is generating some significant buzz. But there are still a lot of people who don't get the hype around a game that is still almost 10 years old - here's why you should be excited.

JRPG's have seemingly been pinned up against the wall this generation, struggling for relevance. Here's why I still care about JRPG's and why I wish they'd stick around.

"I actually found myself a bit backwards from your perspective last week when Starcraft 2 came out.  I never attend midnight launches -- even games I have anticipated the most I felt I could way an extra 10 hours and enjoy the game on a night's rest.  But leading up to the midnight release of Starcraft 2....I was really wishing I was in an uncomfortable line somewhere getting the game when the clock strikes 12.

But I should state that I am a HUGE Starcraft fan, and I spend the night watching several countdown parties (most notably the Day9 Countdown Party, which was great to watch and featured the finals of a huge tournament that had been going on during beta).  SC2 is a game I know I will be playing a year from now, and I was actually a bit sad to miss out on the community experience of getting the game at midnight.

Of course now, already a week later, it hardly matters how soon I got the game.  But I wouldn't have minded going, and the experience may coax me into going to a midnight release sometime in the near future.

Anyway, good read!"

"I comb the B.net forums often (specifically the Starcraft boards) as well as some other Starcraft sites like TeamLiquid.  I don't post on B.net, and it is mostly because there's better discussion to be held elsewhere, but I don't think taking away anonymity is the answer.  The problem with B.net is that it is extremely poorly moderated and the Blizzard community managers act as little more than PR reps.

Real names work great on Bitmob because this site is all about journalistic integrity.  B.net is a forum about a specific video game -- there's no reason to give out my real name to thousands of people simply because I want to submit a bug report or ask a question about my build order.  Requesting that people dole out more privacy information than is remotely necessary is not going to promote quality discussion; it's going to deter discussion altogether.

Of course it's difficult to moderate a site like B.net because so money people come there every day.  But I am more than willing to bet that Blizzard could find some forum regulars who would actually make pretty good moderators, and putting those people in that position would be the right step in fostering an actual community.  The moderators couldn't comment on the inner workings of Blizzard, which is currently what a lot of the community mangers do, but would instead just keep quality content on the forums.  They probably browse the forums more than any community manager as it is, and without having to pay them, you can afford to have as many quality moderators as necessary.

The internet still holds room for quality communities, and doing away with anonymity is no requirement for building such a place.  All that is required is a staff who cares and is willing to keep on eye on thing"

"I like this beginner's guide to Starcraft.  As far as tournaments are concerned, the HDH invitational was a fantastic watch the whole way through, and I'm glad to see you put up a video of TLO, who is by far my favorite competitive SC2 player in the U.S. right now.  Very fun to watch.

One thing I have to disagree on is the 1 base roach  for a basic zerg build.  This build has pretty much become obsolete since the 2 supply nerf roach took a couple of weeks ago.  It's still somewhat viable, but it seems like many high-level players have gone with an early expand with speedlings and some sort of tier 2 unit.  That is what I have adapted to as well, and it seems far better than a 1 base roach build."

"No worries, I don't find it discouraging - I'm well aware of the chaos that is the Internet.  I just found it particularly puzzling because I literally got 10% of the hits as usual, but I just chalked it up to some of the factors you've listed.

At any rate I write mostly for my own references, so I can look back in several years and see what I was playing.  As such hits aren't that important to me but more of a fun meter to watch.  Thanks for the words of encouragement though. :)"

"I feel the exact same way, and don't expect it to subside in GoW 3 because, believe it or not, it's only supposed to get worse.  I've read a couple reviews that say he's such an unbelievable asshole in this one you're actually kind of horrified -- quoting Joystiq "there were times when I was nauseated enough by Kratos' actions that I was momentarily distracted from having fun.".

Of course, that being said, it's supposed to be an incredible over the top experience that's an absolute must play.  Like others have said, the fact that Santa Monica Studios has managed to craft a protagonist that you can really hate is impressive, and if anything it's a refreshing take on the usual good guy routine."

"Interesting point about the baseball game dilemma.  It's been at least 5 or 6 years since I've bought a baseball game and the MLB2K10 demo was pretty great.  Can't justify myself buying it now with FFXIII and GOWIII around the corner but as soon as that puppy hits 30 or 40 dollars I see myself jumping for it."

"Pretty crazy, huh?  I was playing MGS4 last night (I've recently borrowed my roommate's fat PS3), and when the date on my savee file was 12/31/1999....I was perplexed.  Thankfully I wasn't playing anything PSN related so as far as I know I can continue to play MGS4 unrestricted, besides having a nonsensical time-stamp on my save log.

Still...weeiirrrd bug.  Sucks for the majority of PS3 owners who aren't playing a game from 2 years ago.  :P"

"Me and some friends have been battling for a high score in this game the last week or so.  At some point we got a hold of the [ridiculous] music that goes to this game and then realized its "popularity" spawned from here.

My high score right now is just over 90k.  Gotta break 100!"

"I am always incredibly paranoid of game-ending bugs.  Odd because I don't think I've been the victim of one for 10+ years, but (and this could just be chalked up to hazy memory) I remember it happening fairly frequently in the NES/SNES days.  You'd grab an item, die or something, and then suddenly you couldn't get the item anymore.

Not nearly as common anymore but my paranoia persists.  I can only imagine how frustrating it is now."
