Brian discusses a great way to save money and play some awesome games from yesterday. Literally from yesterday, not like "yesterday" when he really means 20 years ago or something.

Of all the games in the past 30 years, few stick out with truly incredible artistic soundtracks. Yeah there are memorable tracks like the Mario theme, or the oos and aahs of Halo, but in this list I document the soundtracks that will leave you in a pool for your own drool.

Buttonmashing is not just a n00b form of playing games. It is a strategic method of gameplay that only veteran-n00bs have been able to truly understand. It's kind of like "The Force" of gaming...

"ht, i'm agreeing with you -- isn't that what the sidequests did in Brutal Legend? Completing sidequests unlocked more health, more songs, etc. etc. They aren't the main crux of the game, and they are unnecessary in order to solely complete the main quest, but they assist you in completing the sidequest. you guys are trolling now -- all i said was I disagree with jeff, because I loved Brutal legend. NOW GO TO MY WEBSITE.

"asn't saying the sidequests in FF are bad, I was just saying they aren't the crux of the game, they are supplemental to the main quests of the game! I think you both raise valid points though, and Jeff I agree we just are on opposite ends of the spectrum, I have a huge man crush on Schafer, and nothing he could in my eyes could be bad. Anyways, check out my site @ http://www.thespoonfe"

"o being a Schafer fan, rocking a Grim Fandango tattoo as a matter of fact, I have to say that I totally disagree with just about everything you said about Brutal Legend.
Schafer obviously wanted to create a game with universal appeal, to tell the beginning of what I hope to be a great series of story arcs within the context of the larger Brutal universe. He is not a master of gameplay, nor of game mechanics--Schafer is a master storyteller, who knows how to keep people intrigued, not with a controller, nor with flashy visuals, though there are a-plenty in Brutal Legend. Schafer has kept me mentally and emotionally engrossed in every single one of his games, all the back to Purple Tentacle.
The inclusion of Jack Black is a huge step in gaming history. It is one of the few times that a megastar has graced the video game world. I feel like you both hold unfairly high expectations for a landmark game in the history of the genre.
If I were to compare games to movies, I would say we are just getting out of the silent film days, when a director would have to focus on visuals and music to tell a story, rather than dialogue and character development; and that is what Schafer has done so well with Brutal Legend.
Of course the game isn't complete -- there is already downloadable content in the works for the game (finally PS3 gets an exclusive deal), and I am sure there will be full-on sequels to the game. Read the first Lord of The Rings book, watch the first Godfather movie, both of these are landmark pieces of art, though they share only a small glimpse into the lives of their protagonists. It takes a series to round out certain aspects of a story, and that is what Brutal Legend is more than anything else. It's an interactive story, with some beat 'em up sections, some driving and racing sections, some RTS sections, and some RPG elements. How many games out there can you say have all of those things? I can name very few off the top of my head (Fallout, Oblivion, Bioshock, Knights Of The Old Republic, Mass Effect, Fable)
Yeah the main quest is short, and the side missions are unnecessary, but *ahem* may I remind you of the ENTIRE FRANCHISE of Final Fantasy. The majority of the side quests only help to alleviate the stresses of the main quest.
Schafer is still a golden child in my book, and one or two attempts at something different don't take him off the radar for me, but quite the contrary -- it shows me that he has the gahoneys to actually innovate rather than remake an old game, or add another boring sequel to the repertoire of all the pre-existing games out there.
Schafer is the man, the Brutal Legend, though not his best work, is still an incredible feat amongst game designers, writers, directors, and storytellers, and god I hope he sticks around for a while because I assure you, whether you liked this game or not, Schafer will have his day, I assur"
