Monster Hunter Tri has made me want to play something better. Is WoW my answer?

A funny thing happened to me as I played through New Super Mario Bros. Wii: I realized that I wanted to beat it simply for the sake of beating it. But I didn't understand the significance of that realization until I thought about why exactly I enjoyed it so much.

Assassin's Creed 2 is, to me, the best example of historical fiction in a game. Not to mention the excellent gameplay and music.

I love earning achievements in games. But I care little about Achievements. What's the difference, you might ask?

Star Parodier is an inexpensive import shoot-em-up for Wii's Virtual Console that is too fun to pass up.

A rare look at a very rare game. 90s horror visual novel Za Shinri Ge-mu.

My first blog here. I quickly wonder how to get along as a Bitmobber.

"I support your minimalist lifestyle. I have similarly finally decided that I don't need much of what is on my shelves, and I'm trying to get rid of it. I'm using Goozex for what it's worth, but (if you know how the site works) most games (worth 100 pts) aren't worth the postage you spend to mail them.

For some reason, I never considered keeping my discs and trashing the cases. This way, I keep the games, but remove the clutter. What a great idea! I might try it. However, I understand your concerns about landfills here too. I should try to recycle the cases if I can."

"Lance: Thanks. As for Japanese MMOs, there is a proper Monster Hunter MMO (unlike Tri, which is more like online co-op) called MH: Frontier. What's more, there is Final Fantasy XI, and the upcoming FFXIV. Those are of the more tried-and-true MMO style, only Japanese. Many of my friends are into FFXI, but I heard it was a grind fest from the start. I'd like to try it out, though, so I'm anticipating FFXIV.

Brendon: That's fascinating that you enjoy the shallowness of the communication in Tri. At any rate, a friend gifted the WoW battlechest to me recently, so Agents are Go at this point. Hopefully I'll like it without losing my real life.

Dan: The lasting influence of PSO is amazing. I've never played a Phantasy Star game, but I hear PSO mentioned as a great game consistently. It's about a decade old, right?

Thanks for the tips. Now, I'm off to see what Demian, Alice Liang, Karen Chu, Ryan Scott, and 11 million others like so much about Blizzard's MMO."

"Maybe for nostalgia's sake, maybe because Garnett Lee is just a great host, but Weekend Confirmed is very good."

"First, I'm very sorry to hear about Rannie.

Second, this is an important article to me because it acknowledges the low priority of video games, more specifically, video game debates. Especially coming from an editor, it's an important point. I'm glad video games haven't supplanted an appreciation of the most important things in life."

"That is amazing."

"People say this on Bitmob too often, but I mean it this time: this is one of the most genuine, significant articles I've read here. I had no idea that you had and have such severe problems, but I understand the (d)evolution of your interest in games because of them.

I think more than any review or regurgitated news story or even most op-eds, it's important to read and write articles like this. Your candor is much appreciated. It's doubly significant because -- though totally unrelated to illness -- games are losing their appeal to me too.

Besides pursuing direct recovery of your depression, anxiety, and headaches, the only advice I can offer is that you try every sort of hobby you've never tried. Maybe you'll discover some tolerable pastime that way. Until then, stay strong!"

"Interesting comparison. I focus my attention toward 1UP over IGN because, like you said, IGN's are more textbook-style reviews -- information about the game that I will naturally learn just be keeping my ears open -- whereas 1UP is different. 1UP's reviews are not simply for learning about game mechanics, but hopefully for laughing and reading solid writing (although this last one doesn't apply like it used to)."

"These sites have always looked worth checking out for trading games. The problem for me, though, is that I like to keep all of my games. So a purchase rather than a barter is the only way I'm comfortable obtaining games these days. Also, I was hoping for advice on how to build my collection, but this blog is about how to build my repertoire. Oh well, nice reviews."

"FFX is still my favorite RPG, and one of my top 3 games of all time. I agree with all your praise and censure. But at the time of its release, it was a miracle that it had voices at all, so I overlooked the sometimes awful voice acting. I never got into blitzball either. Also, while at first I thought I would miss the world map and flying the airship myself, but the pacing and story were so amazing to me that I enjoyed being guided through the world."

"I'm not sure I'm catching your point in this post. You're upset that there is so much to read and play, but also that the games industry is suffering from the global recession; or that triple-A games get more exposure; or that games take too many shortcuts? What exactly are you getting too old for?

I support variety, too. I don't play many shooters or sports games or shovelware. But this industry has to obey its clientele like any other. I don't think the lack of indie games on store shelves is a problem that can be solved; all industries rely to some extent on blockbusters and money-makers."

"I definitely agree that even though Ethan also has a shower scene, Madison is nude more often, and her scenes are clearly more sexual. But I think you shouldn't hate Madison Paige, but rather the developers. I mean, you can hate her as a character if you like, but this post is more about how the developers portrayed her, rather than the woman's personality. In other words, you hate slow, gratuitous shower scenes, and not a particular girl name Madison; I mean, you can't hate someone for trying to stay clean, right? Only the people who get you to interact with her so deliberately.

Anthony: Playing the shower scene 30+ times is not an argument for how the scene is tasteful."

"I think it has something to do with the overall size of the gaming community compared to music and books and movies, and also with the way press treats games.

For one, the community, though it comprises tens of millions of people, is smaller than the community of readers or movie goers. So we all tend to know what everyone else is playing. Furthermore, press is not as segmented like music press is. I mean, you can find Jazz and Guitar and Rap magazines right next to each other; since there is so much music and so huge an audience, that is possible. But not with games. All writers write about the same games and, in the interest of knowledge and me-first-ness, they do so in a timely manner. This cycles around to the small size of the community which allows everyone to stay abreast of new games with the press, and so on.

But I agree, gamers -- me included -- are kind of rabid about completing every freaking game they can afford, and then some."
