Dear Esther proves that games are becoming more mature and that "fun" is no longer essential. Isn't it time developers start looking beyond eliciting mere excitement more often?

"I just think it's healthy to have a mix. I agree with you entirely, 'games' are by definition recreational items, we should be able to have fun with them. I don't think that will ever stop being the norm, and that's not neccessarily a bad thing. I'd just like to see a less dismissive attitude towards the 'interactive storytelling' approach and I think games are the best medium to push that forward."

"know it's not the best, but you could try that LoTR RPG, Third Age I think it was, I enjoyed it a fair bit. Otherwise I reccomend STALKER (prefferably with the Stalker Complete mod) or Deus Ex... But you sound like the kinda person who would hate that game because the people look like Lego. Both are on pc. Deus Ex especially, for 10 bucks it's amazing especially I you download the third party HD tex"

"ave to say, quite interesting. Especially your point about digital being the present, the more I thnk about it thats how I get 80% of my games... Hell the last one I bought from a store was World of Goo (although I don't know why I didn't get that digitally). I know it's already been said but think of places like Australia, I heard this 2-3 months again in a magazine and immediately thought "not here, not now". I'm just getting the wires layed down for broadband THIS WEEK and I live in medium density residential, in the states capital. Even then, I won't be afraid to admit, it's gonna be 50 bucks a month for 12g cap @1.5mbps How much bandwidth is streaming hd video using? In America it may be 'wide enough' but you guys don't know the meaning of being capped. So for some, maybe, I think the whole world still has to settle with digital. Although all the people visiting this site are likely to have thrown away their petty precautions and saved a bucketload of cash by making the switch to digital. However, most of my non tamer friends only used steam after buying a game which needed it to activate. Those people who play xbox, buy the new (terrible) Call of Duty or Gears of War every year from gamestop, they're the ones who are needing to catch up (and ps3 and wii especially, I just like to pick on xboxers). They are the mass consu"

"oh spahgetti-os! I really can't understand how people can hate a game they've never played. Hope for the best, EXPECT the worst. This is bioware, the worst that could happen is that everyone at bioware gets a bite from mr. Blizzard (and all those daimonds in his teeth only make it hurt more) and we end up with no dialogue trees, more levels than years of life and hideously unbalanced new classes. I am not a prphet of doom. I LIKED NWN2. KOTOR 2 HAD SOME COOL BITS. if I can use 'give me all your credits and jump into the central pit/ meat grinder/ drown yourself in bantha fodder' I will be pleased. If I can have thoughtful combat and minimal grinding then I will be delighted. And the graphics, well, it's just you Americans and... Every other western nation. Back here in the land down under if someone says 1mb per second you raise your brow. If someone says 3 you 'asplode in da face', as they say. I want to be able to run the game. I don't want to buy a new 2000$AU PC and then have to pay 100$ a month for connection PLUS SUBSCRIPTION. I'm fine with their efforts, give me star gate world of imperial jade wars: origins an"
