"I used to love the Final Fantasy games but finally gave up after FFX. I barely played FF8. FF9 was good though. To me, the move to ultra-realistic graphics, narrative and even more ridiculously long summoning cut-scenes ruined the experience. I liked the "silent protagonists" (no voice acting), anime style character design (although I've had enough of the ultra feminine looking, hair metal male lead look) and more fantasy versus sci-fi appeal. And I still enjoy JRPGs. Hell, even got my wife hooked on DQ9."

"But you can say that about the majority of games out there."

"While an interesting read, the chance for this idea has passed. The most opportune time was during the DVD media phase.

Right before certain companies created their own media formats like Sony with Blu-Ray. Do you think Nintendo or Microsoft want to pay royaly fees to their direct competitor  to use the media/decoding software? I don't think you'll see any next gen hardware from either company running on Blu-Ray media technology. And to reverse the secenario, do you see Sony ditching their Blu-Ray cash cow to start using some generic format?"

"I agree with Rob. There was a lot of fuss made over Samus having a real voice and personality for once as a selling point to the game so of course it's going to be under a magnifying glass once critics get a copy in their grasp. Nintendo would have been better off keeping Samus a silent protagonist in my opinion and focused on mainly on gameplay mechanic"

"Separating from Facebook will never happen. Zynga depends too much on the message and announcement spamming to promote it's game to the masses. And if you aren't spamming your friends with messages or giving Zynga bucks via their FarmCash, then you must be trudging along at a ridicluously slow pace.

I used to enjoy Farmville, Cafe World and Frontierville but the tedium eventually got to me. The above poster is right though and I already use the same tactic and suggest it as well.

Create a bogus facebook account and share with any friends who play the games you play. Or go to the facebook page for each game and make friend requests there. Most people will friend you because of how much the game rewards you for having more "neighbors"."

"Excitebike. It was my first NES game."

"Leave the non-linear games on the table top where they belong. I was an avid DnD player and no video game can ever really truly capture the real playing experience..

@John Madden

I totally agree with you about the pitfalls of non-linear RPGs. Morrowind, Fallout 3 and and any of the MMOs I have tried out there (WOW, Guildwars, DDO) didn't hold my interest at all. I'd readily sacrifice freedom (the ability to choose my actions in bite size little bland morsels) for scripted story entertainment. I want to feel like I'm part of an evolving, deep story with some drama and impact to the world."

"@ Rob

I see your point. I would contest the Blaster Master entry as well. That's as strong a franchise as Bionic Commando in comparison which is not really at all. Didn't BM2 come out for the genesis anyway?"

"@Rob

I would consider it  a NES franchise more so than PC. I can't imagine the PC version selling anywhere near as many copies as the console version."

"Actually, I think Blaster Master is a stretch when compared to the other nine in this article. All the other series listed have had multiple, successful sequels, true legacies, if you will. Blaster Master had the first game then a bad sequel, nothing for years, then a so-so reboot.

Zelda would be a worthy replacement instead of Blaster Master. It may not have a sequel in 2010 but it had it's origins on the NES and is a huge franchise.

The core of this article is strong franchises from the NES days. Blaster Master fails vs. Zelda"

"@Rob

Look whippersnapper! You're probably too young to have played the first two games but let me tell you they were damn good for their time. I loved the original Metal Gear games. They definitely were originals (as compared to the rest of the NES library)."
