A Gamer Philosophizing

James Cameron the oh so ambitious film maker is releasing an Avatar game which happens to be have stunning 3d graphics! Ground breaking right? Yes... but is it necessary? Plenty of science fiction novels are based upon completly immersive alternate reality. Not unlike a videogame. But how much is too much?

In todays world what many gamers want is a more "adult" experience. Does gaming need to become THAT realistic? Are there people out there who really want to experience a sex minigame in the most realistic fashion? Although it may be a baby step 3d games are leading towards more and more lifelike experiences.

In 30 years who knows what may be around. The question remains how much is too much? Do we as gamers want videogames to become lifelike? Or is the reason that we play games in the first place is to be firmly grounded in non reality?

I wouldn't call using handheld sticks and buttons to control a digital image of a fictional alien race in a fictional world who just happens to have some extra depth "realistic." Development of more realistic characters and scenarios, and also physical interaction in a realistic way (yes, you can cite Rock Band here) push games more toward real life than 3D. I don't think 3D is anything to worry about if you don't want realistic gaming experiences.

We kind of tackled a similar issue on Pixel Revolt this week, but there's a limit to how realistic these games can ever become. The issue these days is that developers might be spending too much time on those graphics and not enough time improving the feel of their game.
