Runic Games was a modest success in 2009. So why are they the best company of the year?
In a money tight recession, they took their work for the defunct Flagship Studios and turned into the incredibly well received Torchlight, perfecting the unperfectable Diablo formula... in only 11 months. They spent the year hard at work, actually making hires, and readying the launch of a MMORPG, which will act as an upgrade to the existing Torchlight game. Best yet, it was all through digital distribution, with the retail product not arriving until 2010.
Traditional gameplay, new business models, and an independent success story. That's why they are the best company of the year.
