Best Podcast of 2009: Giant Bomb's Endurance Run: Persona 4

January's 1Up-ocalypse preceded some great new podcasts both audio and visual.

Over at Giant Bomb though, a different kind of regular video feature was going on.  Every week-day, from February 1st to September 18th, Vinny Caravella and Jeff Gerstmann played Persona 4 adding their often hilarious commentary.

I have no PS2 or desire to crawl through boring dungeons.  Without this I never would have heard of Persona 4, let alone met its deep, charming characters or absorbed it's fantastic story.

Persona is full of weird Japanese craziness that is best enjoyed with two funny guys laughing at it with you.  But when it came to important dialogue, they quickly learned to shut up and let us listen like it was Harry Potter rolled into Shenmue.

I'm not sure this really fits the bill for what a podcast is "supposed to be", namely a distributable piece of audio or video content (with it so far) that is syndicated via RSS or available through some podcatching software (nope).

Distributable series of content, rather.

As much as I love Giant Bomb, I don't think I'll ever watch the Endurance Run series. It proposes a difficult catch-22. I don't want Person 4 ruined, and I don't want to watch someone else play a 100 hour game after I already spent a 100 hours on it.

Also, my personal wish: Endurance Run: Bone Town.

I want to do a podcast marathon for charity sometime. Podcast for 24 straight hours.

@Jon It was distributed on an RSS feed, with the rest of the site's content. You could watch it on an iPod with their iPod Touch/iPhone app. I agree, though -- it's definitely atypical.

@Allistair I'll just say it made me want to play Persona 4 and rue my PS2-lessness. I really hope P5 is on the 360.

@Mike Good luck with that. Loading Ready Run's similar Desert Bus was a consideration for this award too.

A dedicated RSS feed - if being on any RSS was the express indicator of being a podcast, almost every blog based website on the internet with a single piece of audio or video would thus become a podcast (because most modern blog authoring services automatically syndicate RSS for your content). My point is, there is no independent RSS feed solely for Endurance Run, so it's not a podcast.

I really just wanted to honour it some way, and "podcast" was the closest thing I could think of. Maybe "video feature" would've been better.

Sorry if I came off a little snippy, I definitely appreciate your post; I didn't watch every single endurance run episode, but I loved the ones I did check out. Furthermore, I might have been a little more inclined to watch them regularly HAD they came out in a podcast form. Maybe I'll send them some listener mail... a quick look podcast feed would be a fantastic gift.

@Jon Don't worry, I always give benefit of doubt in favour of politeness when people on the internet might be being rude.

There's nothing stopping them from producing individual TANG, Quick Look, Endurance Run, etc. feeds. I might give them some similar feedback.
