PUBLISHING RIGHTS TO EGM MAGAZINE

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, May 29, 2009
- Steve Harris, founder of "Electronic Gaming Monthly" magazine, announced today that he has entered into an agreement with Ziff Davis Media to re-acquire certain assets, including trademarks and publishing rights, with plans to re-launch EGM in the second half of 2009.

"The re-launch of Electronic Gaming Monthly represents a welcome opportunity to continue delivering quality content to gaming enthusiasts," said Harris. "I feel honored to once again be associated with this respected magazine. The talented writers and designers who built upon EGM's original vision have left behind a publication that is uniquely positioned to be successful."

"Electronic Gaming Monthly is and always has been one of the most respected publications among the gaming enthusiast community," said Jason Young, CEO, Ziff Davis Media Inc. "We are pleased that EGM is now in the hands of its original creator, Steve Harris, and wish him and the publication the best of success in the future."

"We have exciting plans for the evolution of what will once again be a leading independent voice for the gaming community," Harris continued. "The twenty year success of the EGM brand has always been built upon a commitment to its readers who I believe will enthusiastically embrace the changes we are planning to introduce."

Additional details and future announcements will be made during the upcoming E3 expo and posted on the magazine's official website at www.EGMNOW.com or via the official EGM Twitter account at www.twitter.com/EGMNOW .

Giving the old crew a phone call is great and all, but it's been almost 6 months and most of those guys have moved on the other jobs. That may not even be an option. With it all said and done though, I'm definitely going to give it a shot.

I'm obviously excited for the re-birth, but without any specific details, I'll remain skeptical. For all we know, the only common factors between the two magazines is the name. Regardless, I'm excited about the new possibility of achieving my old dream, writing for EGM.

May 29, 2009 13:27
That's awesome, but who would want to work for a magazine that already laid off all of their employees?

@Will Everyone was laid off by Ziff Davis. Now that Steve Harris has it back, it's a whole different ballgame.

Ah, you beat me to it. While like you I'm skeptical, this man must care for the brand a lot to bring it back to life. He's probably aware nerds will stomp all over him if he f***s-up.

That's awesome. But guys, if the magazine comes back, please go back to the classic logo (the one you used in this posting). The new "EGM" logo was not nearly as good as the classic "Electronic Gaming Monthly." Thanks, good luck.

"if the shoe fits"... Dan, the first issue of EGM I ever read was the 100 best (and 25 worst) games of all time issue, and I subscribed the next day. From the clever (and often hilarious) writing, to the personalized tone of the coverage, to the credibility and sincerity of the reviews (reinforced by your editors notes, which often spoke of how other magazines would trade exclusivity for review scores and whatnot, something you vowed to never allow)...your work at that magazine commanded a trust from its readers that to this day has no equals in the business. When you left and Mielke took over, that credibility and trust were maintained to a large extent, but the magazine as a whole never felt the same. I sincerely hope you are considering working, in some capacity, for this new generation of EGM. Your voice and direction were a large part of what made me love that magazine.

I followed Shoe and the gang here from the pages of EGM. I'm not going anywhere. That said, I've been reading Electronic Gaming Monthly from issue #2, because it has always been the best damn gaming magazine out there. The combination of the highest standards and the best people had me consuming the magazine cover to cover every time. If Steve Harris is prepared to continue that legacy (HIS legacy... well, his and Ed Semrad's... and you good people, and... you get the point!) COUNT ME IN! How can I help?

May 30, 2009 05:14
This is way cool news. It'd be even cooler if Steve Harris was to make EGM look like it did when it first started. A retro magazine?! Who knows.

Dan I'm with Joe Harmon on this, What got me reading EGM was the writing and staff during yall's tenure. As well as your famous stand on journalistic integrity. Without that, it wouldn't be the same for me. I do understand that it's nowhere near as simple as we're making it, and there might be a snowball's chance in hell of any collaboration, but we're(I at least) are keeping our fingers crossed. That was some news last night, huh.

As a long time fan of EGM, I am extremely happy that the magazine is getting a second life. However, I hope to see some familiar faces writing for the mag, as Dan, Shane, Mielke, Crispin, and everyone else who wrote for the magazine really made it what it was. I hope that you (Dan) will at least contribute freelance articles or maybe have a monthly column in it. That would be awesome. If not, I will still give the mag my support.
