No Madden, no problem: Play the current NFL season in Tecmo Super Bowl

Tecmo Super BowlI haven't picked up Madden NFL 12 yet. And I'm not sure I'm going to, even though I'd love to join in our Bitmob Wants You community callout about it

See, I've got something else to scratch my football itch. I've got Tecmo Super Bowl.

The good people at TecmoBowl.org have released a new ROM which drops the current NFL rosters into the 1991 NES classic. They're even updating it to fit the current injury situation in the league...meaning players should be wary if they pick the Indianapolis Colts. (Quarterback Peyton Manning is out after undergoing neck surgery, and his backup Kerry Collins is...well, not Peyton Manning.)

Tecmo Super Bowl is the game that truly made me fall in love with football. It's laughably simplistic in its options and gameplay -- making for some hilarious antics -- but incredibly addictive. And these days, when I've got a hectic schedule and too many other games to play, its bite-sized sessions fit perfectly.

Download it for free here (it comes bundled with the Nestopia emulation program for PC) if you're interested. Oh, and a word to the wise: play as Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Trust me.

Check below for a brief trailer, featuring the original Tecmo Bowl theme music as covered by video-game rockers The Minibosses.

I'm a John Elway's QB man, myself, but I may have to check this out.

Crappy Manning getting injured after I draft him...

I just played the first week of the regular season and nostalgia'd so hard. This is soooooooo much better than Madden. I love it.

Yes! The ONLY sports game I've strived into playing through. I don't understand, though, why couldn't they score the NFL license in Throwback? Madden: Monopoly.

You answered your own question, Brandon. Madden has exclusive rights to video-game representations of the NFL (with the exception of some mobile titles).

I know...it just pisses me off. The remake was fun, but it just didn't feel right with the abscence of official NFL teams. Another football game that is underrated is ESPN NFL 2K5 -- back in the day, it gave EA a run for its money.

The ability to throw the ball from end-zone to end-zone. Marino, Young, Montana -- easy 500 yards of passing in one game.

I've done this a few years ago.
Still a great game.
