VentureBeat acquires Bitmob!

Hey everyone,

The big news broke this morning via IndustryGamers: Silicon Valley tech/business/games blog VentureBeat has acquired Bitmob. Go read the announcement first...then head back over here for more details. (Anyone catch my now-ancient movie reference in my quote?)

(Update: VentureBeat's post on this.)

First off, I want to say that this is fantastic news for Bitmob. We've been looking for support and investors for a while now, but it's tough doing this as an independent site with no sales or marketing teams, no full-time development, and no real resources besides the cash co-founder Demian Linn and I have personally put into this venture...plus the occasional donation from you fine folks (and almost all ad revenue we have received has gone right back into Bitmob).

It's been a fun and nerve-wracking ride, but we really weren't sure how much longer it could've lasted. The content's been terrific, the community's been fantastic, and our traffic has been climbing (despite the devastating, server-destroying tech issues we had about a year ago that really zapped our momentum). Editorially, we're doing great. But a business needs so much more than that.

Luckily, VentureBeat swooped in to save the day. In late December (like, really late -- we were discussing this over Christmas weekend), the company offered to hire me and take over Bitmob. That means not only will this "community meets the press" idea (professional journalism joining forces with user-generated content) live on, but we can make a proper business out of it, too.

We'll have sales support. We'll have full-time development support. And we'll have a heckuva lot more traffic to work with, too. That means if one of your stories makes it to the front page of VentureBeat, you'll probably get more than 20 times the eyeballs compared to what you're used to around here.

It's going to take a couple of months for the full transition -- we're aiming for March to have all the tools built at VentureBeat to become Bitmob 2.0 (well, technically, 3.0 since we're already in phase two over here). In the meantime:

1. It'll still be business as usual over here. We hope that you guys will keep on reading Bitmob and posting articles yourself to the Mobfeed, from which we cherry-pick stories to vet and edit for the main front page. Don't be afraid to keep building up your portfolio and readership here, because we'll eventually move it all over to VentureBeat (all under the GamesBeat label/division).

2. You will actually see a few Bitmob posts here and there show up on GamesBeat and VentureBeat starting as early as next week. We want to give their audiences a sneak peek of what's to come, and we want to give you guys that extra exposure, too.

Just think: Soon, some of you will be able to brag that you've had a story published on GamesBeat or VentureBeat. That's great for resumes or just egos in general. I'm extremely excited about this, and I'm incredibly thankful that this opportunity came along for all of us. I hope that you'll join me in this new chapter.

Stay tuned for more updates, especially once we move everyone over (because with these new tech resources, we'll be able to build much more over at GamesBeat than we ever could over here). And if you have any questions about any of this, please comment below, and I'll do my best to answer them.

Thank you!

This is great news, I love this site and I can only imagine how much better it can get with the new resources you will have to take advantage of. I've been visiting this webiste since the start, and I watched the community grow over time. Now I get to tag along on a new adventure. This is cause for celebration! Maybe I'll write something new and post it...haven't written anything in a while.

Congrats! Awesome news, and very excited. I suspect we'll see changes, but I'm all for it!

Well this is great news! And now I have a new website to visit--VentureBeat.

Are we going to do a portmanteau of the names and become GamesBeatmob? Anyone?

What about just "BeatMob"? The intercaps are already so popular... :P

Actually, I am curious about the name. Does "Bitmob" live on, or will it all be GamesBeat now?

Also, is everythign being transferred over? Not just stories, but comments, and statistics too? It'd be a real shame to lose all that history.

Don't confuse my questions for pessimism, I'm excited for Bitmob. I just want to make sure staying true to our roots.

January 13, 2012

Hey Chase, great question. I was wondering if I didn't make that clear enough in the original post (I don't think I did). Everything will be "GamesBeat" eventually. It was a hard decision because I really like the name and brand, but it just didn't make sense to have two separate brands when the whole idea is that community members get a chance to reach the front page of GamesBeat (then maybe VentureBeat itself). Like, it'd be confusing to have a separate Bitmob section within GamesBeat. Only legacy Bitmob members would understand that. No one else would. :)

We're planning on moving over stories, comments, etc. all over, yup!

Sure that makes perfect sense. A bit sad that the Bitmob brand will disapper though. I'll probably end up keeping my Bitmob Twibbon and Firefox theme #neverforget

Maybe you can sneak the logo somewhere on the GamesBeat site. An easter egg for the Bitmob faithful.

I like that idea. :)

The thing I love about Bitmob is how uncorporate-ey it feels. Will these feelings be gone once it moves over to GamesBeat and loses its independent status?

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 13, 2012

Not unless you lose your feelings for me, Steven.

Well, I will say that GamesBeat has some more traditional coverage we don't focus on over here (news and reviews, mainly), but I definitely hope the community can keep the "uncorporate-y" vibe alive. And it's a great company. It's not stuffy over there at all! Very cool people. I'm honestly excited to be working with them.

I'm just happy that Bitmob will keep on trucking. I have been writing at other sites for the past month or so, but this feels like a good reason to come back to Bitmob and support it with some good articles. And it's perfect timing now that I'm back from the craziness that was CES!

Default_picture
January 13, 2012

Will users be paid for their articles that are posted on Venture Beat?

It's great to have a closed community writing articles amongst itself, but it gets murkier with Venture Beat's budget and ad capabilities.

If there's no plan to pay, how will Venture Beat and Bitmob repay the users making its content?

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 13, 2012

Good question, Andrew. The answer is no, because the entire business model is based on user-generated content/crowd sourcing (like CNN's iReport or Huff Post).

Keep in mind, it's near impossible for Bitmob/GB/VB to pay a big community. We'd have to issue W-2 (or is it W-4?) forms to everyone, they'd have to issue 1099 tax forms to all those people, and there'd be accounting and tax implications. And what if the writer's under 18? Or living in Poland? It's near impossible to pay a general community like that.

If we wanted to pay everyone, we wouldn't do it the crowd-sourced way, then. We would take the budget, pay just a few specific, approved freelancers, and keep them on the payroll. No need to open it up to a huge accounting nightmare. Then it wouldn't be Bitmob anymore. It'd be like a normal gaming site with its own staff. We wouldn't want to work with the community in that case because it'd be much easier to work with and pay just your direct staff.

That said, we allow users on Bitmob to add their own Google AdSense account to their profiles, so they can monetize their own traffic (100% -- we don't take a cut). That's not a ton of money, but with the bigger audience, a typical blogger would make much more money on Bitmob than he could by himself.

We're planning on bringing that functionality to GamesBeat, too...and the audience there is even bigger. So if you write a story and it gets picked up on the front page of GB or better yet, VB, then you will definitely see the kinda of traffic and AdSense money you really couldn't get here.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I have a follow up. What does this mean for current paid writers at Venture Beat? Will you still have a paid freelancing team? I was due to start pitching news writing for Dean after CES.

I'm curious to know the answer to this one as well. Since, you know, I'm currently a VentureBeat freelancer. ;)

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 13, 2012

That gets a little tricky, but current paid writers aren't changing their status. You guys can continue to pitch the way you have been (I haven't started, btw...that will be Feb. 1). That won't change later, either, but I have some ideas about what would be paid/freelance content vs. community content. Will discuss that with everyone later! :)

January 13, 2012

Congratulations this is amazing news! Maybe I'll be motivated to start writing again it's only been 2-1/2 years. Well maybe not, but I definitely will keep reading everyone else's great work on the site.

Will RSS feeds be affected by the change? Not that its hard to set them up again if they are.

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 13, 2012

When everything's moved over, we'll have to make all feeds come from GamesBeat, because all content will start getting published there.

Grr! I hate change!

Good luck Shoe, Demiann and everyone else. When EGM died I followed you guys to Sore Thumbs, and when that became this I stuck around. I'm trusting in your experience and intuition, again, to make this something greater than what Bitmob could've been on its own.

January 13, 2012

Congrats! Short of Shoe winning the lottery to continue funding Bitmob himself, this really is the best possible outcome for the site. Sure, it'll be sad to see "Bitmob" go, but it was the idea behind that drew the awesome community here (and gave people like myself an opportunity to work on video games for a living), and that's going to live on.

I can't wait to see how all this looks fully integrated into GamesBeat.

Default_picture

The chance to work in the video game industry is why I frequent Bitmob so much. It's really a cool place. Whatever comes of this will be just as cool, and keep helping people like me out!

I have to be honest, though. "GamesBeat" doesn't quite stand out the way "Bitmob" does.

Congrats on the great news! I'll admit, I'll miss the BitMob name (and quietly keep my fingers crossed that the new logo, if there is one, will be lovingly pixelized). At the same time, I'm certain that the spirit of what it brought together will still be here shaping what comes next with faces old and new. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Just promise me you guys won't get too news-heavy. The content here has alwyas been unique and different from the same old news and reveiws posted on the 1,000 other gaming websites.

Awesome news!

Default_picture
January 13, 2012

Honestly, this couldn't happen to a more deserving group of active contributors/critics/journalists.  Surely the lessened financial burden of hosting/supporting Bitmob will allow your staff to instill more energy into creating and supporting more content rather than have your energy sapped due to the stress of keeping a site moving forward on a limited budget.  Here's hoping for a healthy relationship with VentureBeat.

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 13, 2012

James, you nailed it. It was incredibly stressful trying to do this without pay or resources. Obviously, a lot of people in this world have it way worse than I do, but it is really nice to actually see this idea through with proper support! :)

Mikeshadesbitmob0611
January 13, 2012

So ALL content will be moved over? No need to start archiving posted works?

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 15, 2012

That's our plan, Michael. If, for some reason, that can't happen, we'll let the stuff live on Bitmob for a while and give people a chance to archive everything. We have backups of everything as well.

Mikeshadesbitmob0611
January 13, 2012

Also: any plans to bring on more editors to help with the flow? Will editors be compensated going forward, or are there any plans to? Will the same "make it to the Bay Area and meet Shoe so you can get vetted" process be in place for prospective people who want to keep writing for Bitmob?

Not asking for myself, as I've given up on the idea, but when I was wondering about it out loud, some other people expressed interest in knowing as well.

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 15, 2012

That, I don't know yet and probably won't know until I've settled in. I'm not sure how the workflow will go and what the budgets look like, but I wouldn't ask the volunteer staff now to keep on doing a regular schedule like they've been doing. That wouldn't be fair. But I really haven't planned that far yet, to be honest!

Mikeshadesbitmob0611
January 13, 2012

Oh yeah... what happens to Demian? I see no mention of him moving over too. It would be a pretty raw deal to cut him out of this. Any news to share?

Rm_headshot
January 13, 2012

Yes, all content.

Editorial: TBD. But I should note that only about six of us (including Shoe, Demian, and myself) are in the Bay Area, while the others have never been. They want to be here, but CA has rules about importing undomesticated animals.

Nothing happens to Demian. Should it? Because we can totally make something happen to him.

Rest assured, Demian's been a part of this whole process. As co-owner of Bitmob, it really couldn't have happened without him. If Demian doesn't come over to VB, it's because he's already got another sweet gig and he's tired of smelling us all day and all night.

Mikeshadesbitmob0611
January 13, 2012

It couldn't have happened without him, but nothing said so far says anything about him moving over, or how he feels about all this. Would just like to get clarification, is all. Has he been offered a position at VB?

January 14, 2012

Hey Michael -- I started working at Raptr a few months ago while continuing to contribute (although in a significantly reduced roll) to Bitmob. I'm not going to be a regular staffer over at Gamesbeat, but I may jump in here and there  :)

January 13, 2012

So, when this all moves over to GamesBeat, will the Mobfeed still exist? Will it be called the Mobfeed (Beatfeed sounds kind of weird)? Will posts be as easy to create as with Bitmob? Will GamesBeat get a redesign and possibly its own URL?

We're figuring that all out!

January 17, 2012

I don't want to promise anything too early, because I haven't started evaluating all that yet. Let's just say that I like 'em, too, and hope to keep as much as what you guys love about Bitmob as possible. :)

Well, it sounds like we may have eventually had to say goodbye to the current incarnation of the Bitmob for bad reasons instead of good reasons, so that seems to all work out nicely.

I, for one, welcome our new VentureBeat overlords.

Unless they try and silence Minotti. Then it's time to booze up and riot!!

We have tried to silence him in the past. It is impossible.

So can I have like... 2000 shares in Bitmob now?

Default_picture
January 22, 2012

I really hope you guys are bringing more than just your articles and web traffic over to GamesBeat. I don't want to offend you, since you are future employees, but I am not usually one to hold my tongue. That website seems really cheap and boring. The articles are well written, however there is a severe lack of style over there. It really hurts to look at. I really hope you guys can give it a make-over when you are behind the wheel.

Default_picture
January 23, 2012

After some time over at VentureBeat, I've noticed a strong focus on the technology and business side of games. A lot of articles focus on earnings reports, game sales, market phenomena, new game frontiers etc.

As well as a lot of reporting on big game companies like Zynga, EA and Activision.

BitMob seems to take a slightly different approach to games journalism, less news-y perhaps, but with unique articles on the politics of Fallout New Vegas to old game accessories and puzzlers.

When things switch over to VentureBeat, would you encourage community writers to focus more on the VentureBeat ethos of videogame innovation, technology and business?

Shoe_headshot_-_square
January 23, 2012

Excellent question. I was wondering if anyone else was wondering this. :)

GamesBeat is under VentureBeat but is starting to separate itself as an almost standalone site. They started doing some reviews, for example, and you'll see more event coverage, there. So it's already starting to develop a bit of its own identity, and that will further change when I get there (February) and even more when you guys all get there (aiming for March).

It's exciting, because a lot of you will be helping to shape the editorial vibe of GamesBeat! Yes, writers like Dean Takahashi will still be focused on tech and news, as he does best, but we'll have other writers doing other sorts of content, too.

Default_picture
March 29, 2012

Awesome!!!

Default_picture
March 31, 2012

So what does VentureBeat get out of this? I'm sure they didn't do this for charity. What will they gain by buying Bitmob?

Default_picture
March 31, 2012

Kick-ass writers and web traffic probably :D

Shoe_headshot_-_square
March 31, 2012

What Anthony said. :)  They really like what we're doing with the community here, and they want us to bring it over -- our style of content, our "community meets the press idea," and our community guys. And the cool thing is, the traffic is much bigger over there, so whether our community writers just like an audience or want to make some side money with the Google Ads, they'll do better over at VentureBeat. :)
