Major League Gaming

This week DirecTV announced that they would no longer be carrying G4, the self-titled "TV For Gamers" channel. Bitmob community writer Michael Edwards wrote a great article about the news, so we turned to our intrepid Facebook and Twitter followers to get their opinions on the subject. Read the article, read the excellent discussion in the comments, and check out these responses -- then share yours below!

With the apparent demise of G4, we ask: Do you want gaming-related TV shows? What kind? Or is gaming TV just a bad idea?

Via Facebook:

Phuoc DoubleClutch Tran: I don't know many people who watch G4, but when they do it's for nongaming shows.

Juan M. Meza: I stopped watching G4 when they took all the gaming shows off, and X-Play sucks now. I would rather watch video games than most of the crap they have on TV these days.

Rico Witham: Used to watch the hell out of G4, pretty much stayed on that channel. Not really into reviews as my opinion is the only one that matters, but I would be down for watching a televised LAN tourney.

Daniel Feit: G4 was a pale imitation of TechTV, and I never forgave it for consuming that channel and ditching the smart stuff. Good riddance.

Via Twitter:

@MikersMikers: The shows need to be produced and directed by veteran gamers, not network execs looking to cash in. Otherwise they will be dumb.

@randomlyrossy: Here in the UK, we've had a few shows that were just the right mix of reviews and geeky entertainment. Sadly, they're all gone now.

@HGBlobDude: Gaming-related TV can be awesome. Early G4 shows like Portal, Arena, and Cinematech were great.

@Morinar: Gaming-related TV usually caters to lowest common denominator, so it is too basic to be interesting to me.

@Coreymw: It'll work, so long as it isn't full of outrageous skits and terrible content. Make it about the games and the people who make them.

@StevenSimmons: I think it can, just not 24/7 making any random crap with video games. A review show, occasional Starcraft 2 matches, that type of stuff would work. Also, look at South Korea -- gaming content on TV thrives there.

@TheMadSpin: I think when gamers have time to be at their TVs, they want to game, not watch other people with phony personalities do it in low resolution. I think gaming TV will continue in ways like PSN's original shows. On our terms, just like games.

@CosmoRoss: Everything works when love and devotion are properly applied.

I've had an idea for an article about G4 floating around in my head now-- a few things I want to see change. I think the problem that they're facing right now is that their stuck in the middle of lacking credibility and enough content to fulfill their potential viewers needs (Olivia Munn's constantly reminding us that she knows nothing about anything, and the five hour blocks of Cops and Cheaters), and just enough nerd content to drive the Cops and Cheaters fans away. In a better world they would bring more programming akin to their stellar online content to broadcast, but I think that there must be higher ups that are wary of doing that. The only reason I can think of for them to keep those huge blocks of smut on the air is ratings. I'd love to see what their ratings look like, if anyone has time to dig those up, they might provide some insight.

Although I will say that, as much as I'd like to see the station go total full-blown nerd, I'd miss Ninja Warrior.

I'd say go back to TechTV. That was great.
