Hulk Like Punch-Out!!
Written by Aaron Thomas

Editor's Note: Aaron brings up a good point: Sometimes an ad can be so stupid that it's actually brilliant. Though looking at this ad reminds me of an ancient Wookie proverb, especially when playing against someone such as the Hulk: Just let the angry green giant win. -Michael

Some of the Gamervision guys were hanging out in a comic shop when they came across this advertisement in the back of a comic book:

Seeing this ad sent my mind racing. The first thing I thought was that the Hulk would get frustrated with the Wii's iffy motion-sensing capabilities and -- wrist-strap be damned -- throw the Wii Remote through the television in about two seconds. Of course, I've often wanted to do the same thing, and that's when I realized that the Hulk and I really aren't that different...

OK, that's not really how things went. When I saw the ad I thought it was one of the dumbest print ads I had ever seen. Regardless of how engrossed in the action these two are, how is seeing them play Punch-Out!! supposed to make me want to play the game? Is Thing a trusted source when it comes to finding out whether or not a game is worth a purchase? I've read a few of his reviews, and honestly, they're not that great.

But then I realized that the advertisement is brilliant. If Nintendo had put a traditional ad in that comic book it would have been seen by a very small group of folks. Instead, this off-the-wall pairing has been highlighted on several sites around the web and now has the potential to impact millions of people. When you consider that Punch-Out!! hasn't been selling very well, this seemingly stupid advertisement and the attention that it has gotten are just what the game needs.

Of course, some advertisements that appear to be stupid at first glance are actually just plain stupid. Like this one:

That ad just blew my mind.

It's incredible to me that Punch-Out has not been selling well despite rave reviews. Hope it picks up around the holiday season, because I would love to see a new installment.

I'm sad that it's not selling well, but I don't think it's as good as the reviews claim. I enjoyed the game, but there's not $50 worth of content there considering that I got to the last guy in my first sitting (an hour's worth of play).

Did you beat that last guy? Because whole new modes open up once you do. It's the first time I've ever been beaten by Glass Joe.
Raymond Fenandes , June 19, 2009
I haven't played it again since then -- didn't want to beat it in a day. New modes are nice, but I generally am done with a game once I beat it. I'd prefer the content on the front end. There's no reason not to fight boxers twice during the career mode and there certainly should have been more than 13 boxers. Fun game, but a bit of a letdown for a big fan of the series. (I still beat Tyson once a year).

I'm glad I read this if not for the content but for that ridiculous PS3 ad. Remember the one with the baby crying black tears? What was Sony smoking? Hahaha!

waitwaitwait, trust me it gets different enough to be worth the second run... they might be the same boxers but some come with new gimmick (for example second version of bear hugger can be stunned only by star punches and he comes with a squirrel that try to scare you, second version of bald bull will not go down unless the last hit is by star punch) and other come with new moves... just watch some video of TD mode and decide after that

The Playstation as makes no sense whatsoever to me. Can anyone explain that?
Connor Kinnaird , June 20, 2009
Connor: it's supposed to be touting the system's advanced AI.

And... I'm now paranoid of my PS3. Thanks.
