Graphics Comparison (part one): God of War 1 vs. God of War Collection
Written by Aaron Thomas

On November 17, Sony will release God of War and God of War 2 as a compilation for the PlayStation 3. The most notable aspect of this $39.99 package is that the graphics have been re-mastered with anti-aliasing effects, and now run at 720p, and at 60 frames-per-second.

That sounds great, but is the difference worth the money if you already own both games? Judge for yourself with these comparison shots between the original and re-mastered versions of God of War (don't miss our God of War 2 comparison shots as well).

The PlayStation 2 shots were taken on a PS3 running at 720p via component cables. PS2 smoothing was enabled, and the upscaling was set to fullscreen. The black borders in the PS2 versions were there when I played, so I left them in to give as accurate a comparison as possible. The in-game options were set to widescreen, and smoothing was set to “off.” The PS3 screens were taken at the max resolution of 720p. I did not adjust the color or brightness settings for either version.

To recap: The screens with borders are from the PS2 version played on PS3; the full-screen shots with no borders are from the re-mastered game on PS3.

Everything just seems a bit brighter and cleaner to me. Hmm.

Yeah, they didn't do a ton, but it does look better. You can really tell the difference if you look at the larger shots.

Yeah, the bigger shots show the biggest difference...

Both are incredible games that should be played by just about everyone, whichever way possible. I think the PS2 version of those still look great, by the way.

The graphical advancements are huge, granted on an SDTV it maybe unnotcieable but on a HDTV its almost unplayable when your recall its former beauty, lets hope SoTC get the same treatment.

Very good article. Thanks for doing this, you have just helped me decided to buy this when it comes out. I was on the fence, but you showed to me that it will be worth it.

Nice article, I've been waiting for something like this. Both games look great. About what I expected them to look. Can't wait to slay for trophies!

My main reason for re-playing these masterpieces... TROPHIES!!! If not then I would've waited for a price drop.
