A gaming story 16 years in the making.

By Ryan Schuster in SNESGBAA Link to the Past on

I did it. Today at 5:53 p.m. est I beat it. A game I got 16 years ago was finally beaten.

The game Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Now I am a good gamer who has beaten a many games. I have also beaten every Zelda after this one. But this was one that got away. I remember getting it a little bit after it was released in the U.S.. I started off strong in the game and got pretty far. For some reason though I could not get past to one of the dungeons in the game ( I think it was the Ice Palace) I was young at the time (about 4 or 5) and I just gave up. I eventually sold my SNES. Then another chance came. The GBA version came out. That time I got a little farther but distractions led me to never getting near the end. I would not touch the game again until it came out for Wii VC. This time I played awesome all the way through until Ganons castles. I could not for the love of god beat it. Finally today out of sheer boredom I sit down to play it and finally after 16 years and 3 systems finally beat it. It my not seem like much to some but to me it ends a long journey.

Sixteen years? Even I'm not that OCD! Bravo for finally beating it.

Sounds like me with Final Fantasy 7. I've gotten almost all the way through that game so many times, but I have never actually played it through to absolute completion. Maybe I played up to some chocobo eating monster's cave one time, and another time I start at the end and beat Sephiroth, but turn the game off after that because I didn't want to see the ending cut scene unless I had gotten the full story. I have yet to beat the game. Maybe with the $20 download to the PS3 I can finish it, now that I have a long attention span. After all, I am getting an A in a summer school class. 4 and a half hours every day. One class. 15 minutes of break. I think I'll be able to do it.

Reminds me of Majora's Mask for me. I'm going on 9 years this Christmas. I got the gold cartridge and got to around the 4th dungeon and stopped. My friend at college last year kept encouraging me to play it since he had the Collector's Disk for Gamecube, but I never did. I recently got my hands on the Collector's Disk though so I plan on playing it soon. Can anyone tell me if it would be worth it to spend the money on the VC version? I wouldn't mind putting it on my list of games to play this summer. That Zelda art from the next game gave me the Zelda itch.

I heard the collectors disc version is buggy. I bough the VC one and it was as smooth as butter. Funny Majora's mask took me 9 years to beat.

Congrats! Nice work, man. I still need to finish the Minish Cap myself.

So Ryan what did you think of Zelda: Minish Cap?
Toby Davis , July 02, 2009
I liked Minish Cap a lot. It got a little confusing at times but it is my favorite handheld Zelda.
Ryan Schuster , July 02, 2009
Phantom Hourglass is my favorite handheld Zelda.
