At least Final Fantasy changes it up.

Is it just me, or does it feel like it's time to change the Pokemon formula a bit? Platinum released with a bang, and Nintendo have announced remakes of Gold and Silver for the DS.  I don't think they see a need to try anything different.

But I'd rather play a Pokemon game that isn't one I've played before. I'm not talking about any of this Ranger or Mystery Dungeon nonsense. I'm talking about wiping the slate clean; completely re-working the formula for the main series. Of course, I don't have any ideas myself of what to do if such a change were to actually take place. But that doesn't mean I can't complain anyway.

It's like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If Pokemon continues to sell a fuckton of copies and generate a mountain of money for Nintendo, why change it?

By their nature, no established franchise will ever completely wipe the slate clean, especially when it is still as hugely popular as Pokemon. Reboots are a huge risk. If they fail, they can completely destroy a valuable franchise. They're generally only tried when the franchise is already no longer selling, when the owner of the property pretty much has nothing to lose if the reboot fails. In TV, this is known as "jumping the shark."

Oh, I know perfectly well there's no way Nintendo would reboot Pokemon. If I had two Pokemon that bred golden eggs I wouldn't change the formula either. I'm just getting tired of the stagnation.

You know, series reboot aside, I'd settle for having more than a couple frames of animation for attacks.

I'm also concerned about how many colors they'll have left. When will we see Pokemon Plaid/Paisley, and the inevitable Pokemon Houndstooth update?
