Bitmob Community Podcast: UPDATE!

Hello fellow Bitmobbers, just wanted to check in and let all of you know that plans for a Bitmob community podcast are indeed in the works, as suggested recently by Trevor Hinkle. Myself, Trevor, and Brett Bates are in the process of trying to set something up for some sort of test show soon, but we need your help! Since the show will be entirely community oriented, we think that everyone here should help layout what the show will be all about.

We were thinking that a shorter show would be good, possibly around an hour, with 2-3 segments. My suggestion for a first segment would be something that kind of mirrors the Mobcast in that each of us would bring one thing to the table, but that one thing being an article from the community that we would discuss.

From there, I have a few ideas that have been suggested. For the second segment, we definitely want to have the community directly involved and submitting audio messages to us to use on the show. So here's the question for all of you: Would you rather have a set topic for everyone to send in their opinions on or would a "Sound Off" segment be better, where you can voice your opinion on anything?

Also, we need a name! Bitmobbers, give us your ideas! The two I have been tossing around are "Long Live the Mob" and "Beta Test" (which serves to highlight that the show's format is something new and experimental). I'm terrible at names however and would love to hear what all of you think.

To Bitmob Staff:

To anyone on the staff they may read this, we want your opinions too! Also, can any of you suggest the best way for people in the community to get their recorded segments to us and what our best options for hosting the show may be?

The easiest way to get ahold of me right now is via twitter at http://twitter.com/valke

What a great idea!!! Just tell me when it is up, or how to get involved!!!

We could name it Train Wreck . Anyone with any ideas for the podcast or segments, email anyone mentioned in the article above. My email is magicalt@verizon.net.

Names! How I do love naming things. Here are a few off the top of my head:

Pixel Revolt - Okay, so that's from a John Vanderslice album, but it fits nicely with the Bitmob naming combo of computer term + crowd of people.

Mobbin' It - If only so we can say to each other, "Hey, what are you up to?" "You know. Mobbin' it."

2Bits - Another riff on Bitmob. But it also includes a reference to the possible number of segments (2), and to the layered meaning of "two bits," which is to say our podcast will be done on the cheap. Plus, "two bits" originally referred to a quarter, which is what we all stuck in arcade machines back in the day... Ack, I'm exploding my own mind with multiple interpretations!

Also, I'm wary of spambots scraping my email off of here, so for now the best way to reach me is to initially drop me a line at http://twitter.com/bbretterson.

Let's get this started!

Stoked to hear about this! Let us know when y'all put it up.

You guys are awesome!

What about giving members a number they can call and leave a one or two minute message about something they want to talk about? Then you all feed off of them?

Thanks Shoe! Any suggestions for what I targeted at the staff?

I've also added my twitter address and am testing the possibility of voicemail via Skype right now to use for the community to contribute.

So any thoughts on the format for the second segment?

Whoops, forgot to Thanks Donahoe too!

Libsyn.com is probably your best bet for podcast hosting. As for transferring segments, a file hosting site like filefront should be able to take care of that.

The best things I have come up with for a name is:

Little Bit Cast

Mini-Mobcast

the Bimob Com-cast

Another Damn Videogame Podcast

I think Skype would probably be the best way to transfer the files. Skype has a really beefy file transfer app.

Also, Derek... I want in.

As for names? Angry Mobbers, Da Mob, ByteMafia, ByteCrowd.

Lance, I can't speak for Derek or Trevor, but I'll have you know that my height is average. What's with all the short references!? If anything, it'd be the "Average Bit Cast," thank you.
Brett Bates , May 27, 2009
@Brett - Well played Sir smilies/cheesy.gif
Lance Darnell , May 27, 2009
I think both options would be good. There could be a segment where the community weighs in with their opinion on whatever gaming topic is relevant that day. Then maybe there could be a segment where people can talk about something relating to gaming that's on their mind

I think Lance's suggestion "Mini-Mobcast" is great. It's an obvious reference to the site's official podcast, Mobcast, as well as a reference to the Mini-Mobfeed sidebar in which the community's blog post headers are updated. Makes perfect sense to represent the Bitmob community's premier podcast.

I would like to offer my services as an audio engineer and someone who loves podcasting. If you need someone who can record, edit, or process audio please keep me in mind, I would love to be a part of this experience in any way.
Adam Murray , May 27, 2009
Name ideas: The Don of Bits, Bit-Muppets.
Michael Burridge , May 27, 2009
OMFG, Adam Curry just offered his help!!!! +_+

I'll definitely check your show out. Not sure what I could contribute. I could give you audio versions of my reviews, I guess.

Possible names: 3-bit, Mobtastic, BITchin' (lol!), The Other Mob, The New Mob, Bono, Obama, and Jim Carrey Discuss 9/11 Being a Hoax---Just think of how many clicks that one would get you!!!

Don't have an idea for the podcast title but that last segment about random opinions and such should be called Flash Mob.
